As a fashion designer, there is a tendency to want to own all the styles in the world just to look fashionable.
I've been tempted severally to make a thousand and one styles and own a variety of outfits to keep my fashion game but I realised the more I made outfits for myself, the pressure I have to own more and the more my room became cluttered, that sometimes I end up wearing a quarter of all the outfits I've ever made, sometimes I forgot I have some other outfit because I hardly wear them.
Other times, I've had to give out a lot of outfits to my friends, younger ones, and the needy and yet my space remains cluttered because I always find a way to replace them.
I was once a person who had a lot of outfits but still couldn't figure out one to wear for functions and events, because I owned too many.
One day I pondered on a solution to all of that and it turned out that I had to consider the capsule wardrobe which was investing more in timeless, quality and versatile outfits rather than accumulating just any kind of outfit.
Here's what my capsule wardrobe looks like, a pair of jeans, blazers, a pencil skirt, a black dress, white and black tops/t-shirts, black pants/trousers, shift dress, and maxi dresses.
Now it is all in the styling, for instance, if I wear a blazer, I can rock it in different ways which means saving more and achieving more with fewer outfits.
My blazers can be styled with an armless dress, or I could still rock the same blazer with black pants, a pencil skirt or a pair of jeans, which means less is more.
I have two major bags, a white and black bag because these are neutral colours which can be mixed and matched on any outfit.
My shoes aren't left out as well, I have gold, and silver shoes and my sneakers are black and white colours respectively, but whenever I rock them, I rock them in different ways which makes people wonder if I have just a few pair of shoes, I would rather buy different colours of shoelaces to complement my outfit that more of the shoes.
I have carefully learned how to mix and match outfits in creative ways to create a multiple-outfit look.
I have also chosen colours that accentuate my skin tone which can equally be mixed with neutral colours to create amazing statement pieces with lesser outfits.
I ensure I go for high-quality outfits which is durable, comfortable and versatile as well to save me from buying more of the same outfit, which in turn helps me to save money and space.
Ever since I embraced the minimalist approach, I have changed my habit of buying out of impulse, and the desire to own everything that tickles my fancy, I have also learned to choose quality over quantity, and my financial habit has greatly improved because I go for my needs and not a mere want, I am mindful of how I spend my every dime, I have also learned to appreciate the little I have gotten which is why I ensure to maintain whatever I own, through minimalism I have learned to be creative and innovative.
This in turn has now reduced my anxiety, as my space is less cluttered, rather than arranging my bag and wardrobe all the time as a result of too many outfits and items, I now focus on more important, I practice mindfulness, and I enjoy the present and mental clarity as well.
I no longer have the pressure of owning every item I am rather focused on a simplified lifestyle which has made me happier, more productive, and creative and improved my financial stability.
