It's important for every individual to have values as it helps in shaping and setting goals which guides our actions. There are some core values amongst others which I tend to practice in my everyday life while still being minimalist.
There are many values we humans practice but I'll focus on the five which I personally practice as a requirement for my existence which of course reflects in my actions and they are;
Self-direction:
This is one value I adapted into my life during my first year in the university as I was all alone with no parent or guardian to instruct me on what to do. I read a lot about it, especially because it was taught in one of the topics during philosophy class. It was really an Interesting one and to live my life properly, especially as a university student, I had to adapt to this value. I was able to manage my work and study all by myself without having difficulty of any sort making sure that whatever I was doing was minimal as I tried not to overdo it. It's one value that is really expected of a lot of people because it does help, especially in situations where there's no one to help or instruct.
Perseverance:
We all go through difficulties and delay in one way or the other as life always tends to give us lemons and if one can't persevere, there could be gnashing of teeth so, perseverance is one value that is very vital for any individual. This has really helped me keep focus even when everything seemed to not be working, I really had to hold on to it, not letting my flesh give up and one way or the other. It's not easy to persevere but I've trained myself to the point of not wanting to give up easily on something I know is important and somehow, I always pull through and at the end of the day I'm always glad I had a value as perseverance.
Tolerance:
To live in society, we all definitely have to be tolerant so as to live peacefully with others. Tolerance is one vital value every individual needs to possess as it goes with us to anywhere in this world. We have different people, ideas, cultures, traditions, ideas all around the world and without tolerance in place, one can't live or relate peacefully because not every time will things always go the way we want it so it's up to us to be ready to forebear the opinions or behavior of others which we tend to dislike or disagree with just for peace to reign.
Respect:
I know we all love to be respected and to get respect in our world today, one needs to have self-respect because as we all know, respect is reciprocal. It's the way you treat yourself that others out there would treat you, first step to having respect is creating healthy boundaries. When we can respect ourselves, it's 90% possible that we can respect others out there and get the same energy from them. Whether or not a person is really important to you, everyone; both young and old deserves to be respected. It's good value to be polite to people, respect their wishes, boundaries, beliefs, culture etc as it helps one stay out of trouble too.
Non-violence:
This should be a personal practice for every individual as it's very important. Being non-violent shouldn't only center around the doing of harm towards humans but also extends to plants and animals. I've seen where people get so violent especially with animals and that shit gets me really sick. As individuals we should practice not to want to cause harm to others under any circumstance or condition. Non-violence is a creative method of resolving conflict.
These are the five core values in my life that I really had to practice and learn the very first day I left my parents to stay on my own amongst different people in the society. I figured that if I didn't have this values guarding my life, I'd make lots of mistakes that could get me into serious trouble. The university is a place filled with diverse people with different beliefs, rights, behavior etc, plants and even animals and these five values I aforementioned has really helped me stay minimal and at peace amongst the people I met there.
