I don't consider myself a design guru. I mean, I used to be the last person in a room to notice a piece of pretty furniture until it became important to properly observe my environment and have an opinion about things I always considered irrelevant.
To explain how much I suck, I never go clothes shopping alone because I'm certain of my ability to buy rubbish. I have my friends who go with me and select things for me. I would be a walking mess without them.
In recent times, I've been forced to pay attention to furniture and realise what I like and don't like. It's pretty hard having an opinion about things when you've never cared about them in the first place.
My furniture history
My childhood home was very small. We had 2 bedrooms and no living room so I never had the opportunity to know what a home design should look like. Both rooms were makeshift bedrooms and living rooms.
The bigger room had a 5 by 6 bed, 2 single-seaters, 1 double-seater, and a centre table that never matched with the couches, a hideous shelf that stood behind one of the chairs and an unnecessarily large computer table where we kept our large desktops.
Within that same room, we had a stack of large suitcases where we kept our clothes and a TV stand with one of those big round televisions. Now that I think about it, that room was mad crowded. We also had a wardrobe but the suitcases were too many to fit in.
Growing up there, I guess I was tiny enough to not realise that the house was very tight. We lived there for 14 years but I only lived there for 8 years coz I was born in between yet I have so many memories of that house.
My ideal furniture style
I have a love for white walls, pretty ornamental plants, a tv with a pretty stand and wall unit, single L-shaped furniture and a round glass centre table.
I've pictured it so many times. The kind of ornaments I would keep on my wall unit, and the picture frames I would stand there. I'll be going for a monochrome design because why not?
Monochrome was made for people like me who lack the eyes for design. Colours don't excite me so much. I'll have my couch in black velvet so it'll be soft to sit on, I'd use window blinds instead of curtains because they don't require that much maintenance and I'd have them in either black or black and white.
My centre table would be in glass to complement the velvet couch and it would have black legs to fit in with the rest of the house.
I hope to have enough leg room and empty space so I could easily put up a ring light anywhere and make videos. Every part of the house has to be picture-perfect.
My bedroom would be just as simple and empty. A small bed because I don't fancy big beds, side tables and some ornamental plants for warmth.
The idea of all this is to have a peaceful and serene home. I have the perfect picture in my head and I look forward to getting my own space and fixing it up just the way I want.
