📷 Exploring Mespelbrunn (Spessart Forest)

Hello dear friends,

My last post on HIVE was about the moated castle of Mespelbrunn, the architectural landmark of the Spessart. Unfortunately, the castle was closed and so I could only take photos from a distance. Thanks to this circumstance, however, I was able to go for a walk in Mespelbrunn. I passed another of Mespelbrunn's sights - the crypt chapel of St Mary.

in meinem letzten Beitrag auf HIVE ging es um das Wasserschloß von Mespelbrunn, dem architektonischen Wahrzeichen des Spessarts. Leider war das Schloß ja geschlossen und so konnte ich leider nur Fotos aus einiger Entfernung schießen. Diesem Umstand war es aber zu verdanken, daß ich noch einen Spaziergang in Mespelbrunn unternommen habe. Dabei kam ich bei einer weiteren Sehenswürdigkeit von Mespelbrunn vorbei - der Gruftkapelle St. Maria.

The neo-Romanesque crypt chapel of St Mary of the Counts of Ingelheim was built in 1874/1875. It is a three-aisled basilica with a round apse.

Die neuromanische Gruftkapelle St. Maria der Grafen von Ingelheim wurde in den Jahren 1874/1875 errichtet. Dabei handelt es sich um eine dreischiffige Basilika mit runder Apsis.

When I took these photos, there was also an obviously newly in love couple - around my age - on site. The man was probably quite knowledgeable about art history and was able to tell his girlfriend a few things worth knowing. It was also very nice of them to interrupt their tour of the chapel so that I could take my photos in peace ;-)

Als ich diese Fotos gemacht habe, war auch ein offenkundig frisch verliebtes Pärchen - in etwa in meinem Alter - vor Ort. Der Mann kannte sich wohl recht gut in Sachen Kunstgeschichte aus und vermochte seiner Freundin einiges Wissenswertes zu berichten. Es war auch sehr nett von den beiden, daß sie ihre Besichtigung der Kapell auch mal kurz unterbrachen, so daß ich in Ruhe meine Fotos machen konnte. ;-)

Of course, the Spessart is not only suitable for marvelling at architectural monuments. The Spessart is largely rural and secluded. It is an excellent place for a holiday away from the stresses of everyday life. The Spessart can justifiably be described as an Eldorado for hikers and mountain bikers.

Der Spessart eignet sich natürlich nicht nur dazu, Baudenkmäler zu bestaunen. Der Spessart ist weitestgehend eher ländlich und einsam. Man kann hier hervorragend Urlaub fernab des stressigen Alltags machen. Der Spessart darf mit Fug und Recht als Eldorado für Wanderer und Mountainbiker bezeichnet werden.

There is also a hotel in Mespelbrunn in the immediate vicinity of the castle. The hotel itself almost looks like a castle. You can certainly spend a few relaxing days here in proper style.

In Mespelbrunn befindet sich auch ein Hotel in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Schloß. Das Hotel selbst mutet schon fast wie ein Schloß. Hier kann man sicherlich stilecht und gut ein paar erholsame Tage verbringen.

When I was in Mespelbrunn, it was pretty cold. I think you can see it clearly in the pictures. But even at these temperatures, it was very pleasant to get a good breath of fresh forest air.

Als ich in Mespelbrunn war, war es ziemlich kalt. Ich denke, man kann es auf den Bilder auch gut sehen. Aber selbst bei diesen Temperaturen war es sehr angenehm, mal eine ordentliche Ladung frische Waldluft zu tanken.

My actual destination was Mespelbrunn Castle. If you come from the A3 motorway, you pass the district of Hessenthal shortly before Mespelbrunn. You pass directly by the Hessenthal pilgrimage church, the burial place of the Echter family and a pilgrimage destination documented since 1293. However, the buildings of the imposing fortified church are considerably younger. The old Gothic church, which is now a side chapel of the large pilgrimage church, was built in 1493 and served as the burial place of the Echter family until 1600.

Mein eigentliches Ziel war zwar das Schloß von Mespelbrunn. Wenn man von der Autobahn A3 kommt, passiert man kurz vor Mespelbrunn noch die Ortschaft Hessenthal. Man kommt direkt an der Wallfahrtskirche Hessenthal vorbei, dem Grabgelege der Familie Echter und zugleich nachweislich seit 1293 urkundlich belegt ein Pilgerziel. Allerdings sind die Gebäude der imposanten Kirchenburg erheblich jünger. Die alte gotische Kirche, die heute eine Seitenkapelle der großen Wallfahrtskirche ist, wurde im Jahre 1493 erbaut und diente bis 1600 als Begräbnisstätte der Familie Echter.

The Chapel of Grace was built in 1452 and was continuously extended at regular intervals until 1954. Since 1969, the churches of Hessenthal have served as a place of worship for the parish of Hessenthal-Mespelbrunn. To this day, pilgrimages take place here five times a year.

Die Gnadenkapelle wurde 1452 erbaut und in regelmäßigen Abständen bis 1954 stetig erweitert. Seit 1969 dienen die Kirchen von Hessenthal als Gottesdienstraum der Pfarrei Hessenthal-Mespelbrunn. Bis heute finden fünf mal im Jahr hier Wallfahrten statt.
