Near Auckland New Zealand lies a lake called Wainamu. At one end lies a huge sand dune with a face so steep and high that people from all over come to climb and surf it! To get there takes a 45 minute walk up a shallow stream feeding from the lake, or across a large area of sand dunes. The dunes are black sand like many of the beaches on the West coast of New Zealand, so you have to wear sandals or trainers to climb or walk over them, as in Summer it gets far too hot to walk on barefoot. The lake is a popular swimming spot with many waterfalls and trees that people jump off into the lake. On any weekend in Summer it a great place for a swim, a sand dune surf, and a picnic.
On the day we were there a sun halo surrounded the sun, making for a surreal scene of sand dune surfers dwarfed by the huge sun halo. Not a sight you see every day!
