Today, I'm here to share a slightly different photographic experience in surfing. Last weekend, I was invited by the Itacoatiara Bodysurfing Association (Niterói – RJ, Brazil), where I live, to attend a gathering of bodysurfing enthusiasts at the beach.
The event is quite simple and small, and it brought together a group of people who practice bodysurfing or ride waves chest-first without a board! I'm not sure what you call it where you live (feel free to tell me in the comments!), but here in Brazil, folks also refer to it as "pegar jacaré" ("catching a crocodile" literally speaking). There's also a form of bodysurfing where you use a handplane, which is a hand-held board that helps ride the waves.
Itacoatiara Beach is a very diverse and eclectic spot for surfing. On that day, the ocean conditions weren't perfect, but people were surfing with surfboards, bodyboarding, and, of course, the bodysurfing crew.
The thing about bodysurfing is that people literally turn their bodies into surfboards. From now on, everything I'm going to say is just my perspective, and I'm not sure if it makes sense: from my viewpoint as a surfer and photographer, to bodysurf, you have to stretch your body so that it's as straight as possible (with a slight curve) and can slide on the wave with minimal imperfections. Imagine the strength these folks must have!
There were some really talented kids from a nearby bodysurf school on that day! I was amazed at how these little ones handled relatively big waves. I couldn't even get close to the shoreline in those conditions! Haha.
And to top it off, the more experienced folks were pulling off some fantastic maneuvers! Yes, maneuvers! I don't know the names of any of them, but here are some sequences for you to get an idea of what it's about!
As a photographer, I had only captured bodysurfing a few times because it was never my focus. I started by photographing people riding small surfboards, which I stuck with for years. Earlier this year, when I started spending more time at Itacoatiara Beach, I began photographing bodyboarding since it's the primary sport practiced there. It was a process of learning the moves and critical moments of the surfers, and I learned a lot from the local community I got to know.
So when I received the invitation to this bodysurfing gathering, I didn't think twice. It was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the sport and get the hang of capturing it. I must admit it's still quite challenging. From the outside, all you see is a head and an arm gliding over the water, which is very different from seeing a whole body on a board. In bodysurfing, the person is much less conspicuous, and sometimes, it's hard to tell whether they'll catch the wave. In this case, for example, you might miss the drop (which is always crucial in any of those sports, surf, bodyboard, or bodysurf). The maneuvers are also so fast that you have to stay alert all the time not to miss any shots!
In the end, it's just another part of the learning process. Every process is learned through experience. The more you try, the more you know, and the more you get it right.
I plan to explore more of this sport in photography and bring back some epic shots to show you all!

Hoje eu venho trazer aqui uma experiência fotográfica no surf um pouquinho diferente. No último fim de semana eu fui convidada pela Associação de Surf de Peito de Itacoatiara (Niterói – RJ), onde eu moro, para comparecer a um encontrão de atletas de bodysurf na praia.
O evento é bem simples e pequeno, e foi uma reunião de uma galera que pratica bodysurf ou pega onda de peito, sem prancha! Eu não sei como você chama isso onde você mora (se você quiser, me conta aqui nos comentários!), mas aqui no Brasil a galera também chama de “pegar jacaré”. Tem uma modalidade de bodysurf também em que você usa uma prancha de mão, chamada handplane, e eu acredito que ela dê uma ajudada na hora de pegar a onda.
A praia de Itacoatiara é um lugar muito eclético para o surf. Nesse dia a condição do mar não tava maravilhosa, mas no mesmo dia tinha gente surfando de quilha, bodyboard e claro, a galera do bodysurf.
A questão do bodysurf é que as pessoas literalmente transformam seu corpo numa prancha de surf. E a partir de agora, tudo o que eu vou falar é coisa da minha cabeça e eu não sei se faz sentido: da minha visão de surfista e de fotógrafa, pra fazer o bodysurf você tem que esticar tanto o seu corpo pra que ele fique o mais reto possível (com uma leve curvatura) e consiga deslizar na onda a ponto de praticamente não ter imperfeições. Imagina a força que essa galera não deve fazer?
No dia foi uma galerinha de peso de uma escolinha de bodysurf da cidade vizinha, a maioria era criança! Eu fiquei pasma de ver como essas pessoas pequeninhas caiam num mar relativamente grande pra elas. Eu não conseguia nem chegar perto da beira d’água nessa condição! haha
E pra completar, a galera mais experiente abusava nas manobras! Sim, manobras! Eu não sei o nome de nenhuma, mas aqui vão algumas sequências pra vocês entenderem do que se trata!
Como fotógrafa, eu já tinha registrado poucas vezes o bodysurf, porque nunca era o meu foco. Comecei fotografando a galera surfando de pranchinha, e fiquei nisso durante anos. E no inicio desse ano, quando comecei a frequentar mais a praia de Itacoatiara, comecei a fotografar bodyboard, porque é o esporte principal praticado aqui nessa praia. Foi um processo conseguir aprender as manobras e os momentos críticos dos surfistas e aprendi muito com a galera que fui conhecendo localmente.
E aí quando recebi o convite para o encontrão, não pensei duas vezes. Foi uma boa oportunidade de aprender um pouco mais sobre o esporte e pegar as manhas dos registros. Confesso que ainda acho muito difícil. De fora você só vê uma cabeça e um braço deslizando sobre a água, o que é muito diferente de ver um corpo inteiro em cima da prancha. No bodysurf, a pessoa fica bem menos evidente e as vezes é difícil entender se a pessoa vai entrar na onda ou não. Nessa, você pode perder o momento do drop (que sempre é muito importante em qualquer um desses esportes, surf, bodyboard ou bodysurf), por exemplo. As manobras também são tão rápidas que a gente tem que ficar atento o tempo inteiro pra não perder nenhum clique!
No final das contas, é mais um processo. E todo processo é aprendido com experiência. Quanto mais você testar, mais você aprende e mais você acerta.
