Maybe not, but when I walk through the old part of town and look at the doors, I try to imagine who lives behind it. Last saturday I had to go into town. It had snowed a bit during the night, so I chose to walk. I brought my camera and planned to walk through the old part of town. There were few people to be seen in the streets. Even I often walk through this part of town to look at the architecture, I never get tired of looking at the old houses. When looking at the doors, it makes me wonder who lives here. Some are simple. Others are somewhat more elaborate. They come in many differnet colors. This is a small selection of the old doors from my saturday morning walk.
The Old Town in Kristiansand is called «Posebyen». This is also where you will find the largest collection of old wooden houses in Northern Europe. Because of several fires the amount have decreased over the decades. Most of the houses were built in the 1700 and 1800s. Almost all are built of wood and have only 1 or 2 floors.
Two doors that are still decorated for Christmas. Maybe the people living here has been away to celebrate Christmas or New Year somewhere else?
Not far apart I found this simple white door. The house is also white. Maybe there is a person / persons living here who do not like to stand out with a colorful door or decoration outside?
Twin doors. They look exactly the same. But they belong to two houses. They even have matching flower pots. These must be two good neighbors.
Two in one. A door for the human (s) and one for the cat. This must be a human who loves animals. Maybe an older person who lives with the good company of his cat?
When «Posebyen» was established originally, it was ordinary working people who lived here. There was then a clear social structure, that is not here anymore. Originally the carpenters lived down by the river. Workers, servants, sailors and most of the poor lived in the center of the Old Town. There are all kind of people living here today.
A broken door,no longer in use as the entrance to a house. Since it hasn't been repaired, maybe they have moved and noone is living here now.
A door with seating on both sides. Many of the old houses have these benches built into the railing of the stairs. I can imagine that in the past you sat here and had a chat with your neighbor.
This is a basement door that is no more than a little over a meter in height. The house is not built of wood, but concrete. I'm on my way out of «Posebyen» and the houses here are built in concrete. Because of the many city fires, the wooden houses were replaced with concrete houses after each fire. For that reason, there are not that many left. But we still have enough well preserved houses to really enjoy a walk among the old architecture.
