I can't remember when or even why I started shooting photographs of graffiti on walls. It's one of those inexplicable things, maybe like someone collecting Pokemon cards or something similar. But I seem to have become a little addicted to shooting graffiti and in particular an artist who goes by the name of Coloquix.
It can be a bit of a challenge finding Coloquix's works. He (and he is a he!) doesn't reveal where each piece he's created is located but eventually I manage to find his latest stuff and sometimes purely by chance.
This is a collection of Coloquix's works shot mainly around Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. I realised in collating these photos that most of these pieces no longer exist so I'm happy to keep the memory of Coloquix's work alive.
Colour Coloquix
I spotted this one on Coloquix's Facebook page and I couldn't figure out where this one was. I looked for clues in the background such as the structure of the steel around the image which has a particular arrangement. Still it took me weeks to figure out where this one was located and this evening I had a trip over to shoot it!
I had intended to shoot this in the dark and add colour gelled lighting but it gets dark sooooo late here in the UK at this time of year so I Photoshopped the colours instead!
Guitar Girl
Coloquix has been known to model his trade mark figure on real people he's encountered. Clearly this one was a guitar fan!
Along came a spider
I have no idea what the title may have been for this one but it's not for the arachophobics amongst us!
I've left the dumped mattress in the frame rather than trying to crop it out since Coloquix's girl seems to reaching out to the bed bugs!
I spy....
One of those fortunate shots where I had the right lens, the right light and a convenient tree to shoot through. Focussing wasn't easy though!
All at sea in the night
I've shot a few of Coloquix's pieces in the middle of the night with lights all over the place. This is @inksurgeon posing in the dark freezing his ass off while I run around waving lights!
Coloquix on an industrial scale
I reckon this must be the biggest piece I've seen by Coloquix and almost certainly required a lot of effort to bring a high reach set of ladders to reach on high! This was painted on the side of an old concrete chemical vat and is now long since demolished which is just as well because this place was quite badly polluted!
CLQX
Another piece sadly now gone because the building this was in is flattened!
Coloquix on the roof
In Sheffield on an abandoned brewery roof is this piece by Coloquix. The building is still standing but sadly is surrounded by impenetrable steel fencing and I have no way to tell if this still exists.
Watching the world grow by....
An old waterworks in the middle of nowhere with it's grand architecture left to rot.
Probably the soggiest and squelchiest urban explore I ever did after sinking upto my ankles in the boggy ground, I'll be back in the dark to ruin more footwear soon.
Bring me the head of Coloquix
I don't know the title the artist may have chosen for this work but I would imagine "bring me the head of Coloquix" would work:
BLM
This work appeared around the same time as the Black Lives Matter movement was gaining traction. Another piece now sadly gone forever to make way for new houses I can't afford!
Rolling Stones Fan?
This reminded of a graphic used by the Rolling Stones and having met Coloquix in person, I'd definitely say he was a fan!
Sacrificial Coloquix
Shot in the old firing butts on an abandoned military firing range, I lit this one in the dark with a short blast of light from a powerful flashlight:
Waterworks
Another piece in an old abandoned waterworks which is now being converted in to posh bijou apartments for the terminally wealthy!
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
