In the fynbos (finebush) biome, one finds countless different species of plants. It is truly one of the world wonders; there are so many different species of plants. Yet, there is increddible symmetry in these plants. The unique way that they grow allows the person who views the plant like an abstract artwork to marvel at the unique symmetry.

In this post, I have tried to somehow capture this extreme symmetry, or what I find to be symmetry. In the differences that appear, you are brought to the stand still that this bush is in fact a living plant and not an abstract artwork in the gallery of some building.

I have fallen in love with these plants. To such a degree in fact that I have grown them in my garden for over seven years now. They never cease to amazing me and they are constantly recreated in the garden through either seedlings or the cuttings I make. They are living artworks.

Fynbos Symmetry

Postscriptum, or Symmetry Everywhere You Look

When you look at these plants at first, there does not seem to be much symmetry going on. But when you stare at it for a while, the seemingly symmetrical shapes takes form. I want to turn these photographs in abstract art soon. If I find the time, I will begin with this new project of mine. I have documented a lot of these plants throughout the years now, and I need to get the creative juices flowing to make these abstract art pieces.

There is a strange calmness in these photographs, or in the plants that I photographed. The process of photographing them is also soothing and calming. One takes a stroll in the fynbos plants and relax. I do this as often as I can, but I am not always able to do it. But when I do, I take it all in. The air smells of the freshly brushed against plants. Most fynbos plants are extremely fragrant. The grounded feeling of my feet planted against the ground and the sea spray caused by the sea being a couple of meters away from you.

Photographs does not do justice to the beauty of these plants and the environment they grow in.

Hopefully you might experience similar types of feelings. It is so sad that we have cut ourselves from nature by living in these concrete jungles.
