A snowshoe hike is forever
Hello everyone, people of Hive! I hope you're enjoying this beginning of the week. Today I would like to take you to a snowy, cold but wonderful, sunny and enchanted world: I want to share with you the story and the shots of a beautiful day that I spent on the slopes of a mountain in Abruzzo, in Campo Felice in the direction of the Rifugio Sebastiani. It was January 25, 2025 and my partner and I decided to embark on a new adventure, doing something new, testing ourselves and facing a tiring but certainly satisfying day.
I had been trying to plan a snowshoe hike to the Sebastiani Refuge for a couple of weeks, together with some friends, but unfortunately, every time I tried to contact someone, I always received cancellations or responses with no interest. After monitoring the weather for days, we decided to go exploring, just the two of us.
We had never done a snowshoe hike and, what's more, we didn't even have the material or technical clothing to go on the snow... nevertheless, we didn't care about anything and wanted to go and try the feat!
We are not inexperienced: before leaving, I got very precise directions from a friend of mine who had already done this hike; in addition, I looked for the exact itinerary on WikiLok, complete with images of the route, mileage, gradient and suggestions for less experienced hikers; obviously the weather forecast was fundamental for choosing the day; and last but not least, I made sure that there was the possibility of renting snowshoes directly at the beginning of the trail, also because, otherwise, we would have had to rent or buy them in advance before leaving Rome, an unwise choice considering that we didn't even know if we would really need them or if, considering that it would be our first snowshoe hike in our life, there would be other occasions in which we would have wanted and been able to use snowshoes.
In short, everything was established and planned in the smallest details. We prepared sandwiches for lunch, water bottles, clothing (as "technical" and layered as possible, to avoid feeling cold or hot), trekking shoes, backpack and off we went! Early departure from Rome: we would have liked to start walking at around 9, considering a 2-hour drive to get to the start of the route.
We were very lucky: the car ride was very easy and smooth and once we arrived at our destination, we easily rented snowshoes (unfortunately only in cash, pity, the only flaw) and after enjoying a quick coffee at the Rifugio Alantino, near the parking lot at the beginning of the trail, we started our hike.
There were other hikers walking ahead of us, all in their 50s and older, but all wearing super technical clothing, which made us feel a bit inadequate... two runaways! haha! Despite everything, we were very fast and at a good pace we overtook everyone in front of us on the trail.
Our goal was to reach the refuge before 12, so as to descend into the valley before it got dark and, possibly, with the warmth of the sun still warming us on the way.
We were indeed very fast! As we walked, the trail became more and more challenging: the first few kilometers were practically flat, but then, in the last third of the route, the climb became deadly. Even though we were wearing snowshoes, the thick and dense snow gradually threatened to make you sink in with every step, with a consequent increase in the perceived effort to pull your foot back up and move forward with the other. I don't think I've ever seen so much snow in my entire life: everywhere I turned, everything was white, pure. The people in front of us became increasingly rarer as we advanced in altitude towards the Sebastiani Refuge. The cold was felt only if we stopped for a moment to rest and catch our breath: the secret in these cases, I believe, is to never stop, but to slow down until reaching a speed that allows us to continue without hesitation, despite the fatigue that seemed absolutely interminable and increasingly arduous.
Riccardo was behind me for the last few kilometers, a little more tired than me because, in the previous days, he had done some training that had tired his muscles. I wanted to wait for him but I knew that if I had stopped, I would not have easily regained the rhythm, breaking it tremendously. I preferred to continue and wait for him at the top, doing so, by the way, would have given him a morale boost: seeing me ahead, he would not have given up and would have continued to climb to the goal.
And so it was! Ah, what an indescribable joy to reach the long-awaited refuge! Riccardo arrived a few minutes after me and we finally relaxed, enjoying the landscape, eating our packed lunch and refreshing ourselves with a good amount of water. There were already some people at the refuge, but fortunately not many, who were still on the way, arriving on the climb.
We took advantage of those moments of calm to enter the small refuge, wonderful, and enjoy a cup of coffee with a nice piece of apple pie: well-deserved!
Then feeling ready and charged again to return to the valley, we put the snowshoes back on our feet and set off for the descent. On the way we met a couple of people who were feeling unwell: it is not a walk in the park, and fainting from low blood sugar is always around the corner. In fact, I noticed that mostly there were groups of at least 5 or 6 people, sometimes even larger, and rarely did we meet solitary hikers. On excursions like these it is always advisable to never venture out alone, especially if you are not athletically trained or have never had experience of mountain walking.
I must admit, not without pride, that Riccardo and I did really well! We completed our walk in less time than my friend had estimated, and we still enjoyed it, especially the descent! I can't say the same about the climb in fact: the last part before arriving at the refuge is definitely not for the faint of heart. You have to hold on, keep your nerves steady, and try not to think about the effort. Focusing on the pace of the step and the beauty of the nature that surrounded us was, in my opinion, a great help that allowed me to overcome the moment of great breathlessness to reach the final goal. Not bad for our first snowshoe hike!

Una ciaspolata è per sempre
Ciao a tutti, popolo di Hive! Spero di trovarvi bene in questo inizio di settimana. Oggi vorrei portarvi in un mondo innevato, freddo ma meraviglioso, soleggiato e incantato: voglio condividere con voi il racconto e gli scatti di una bellissima giornata che ho trasorso sulle pendici di un monte abruzzese, a Campo Felice in direzione del Rifugio Sebastiani. Era il 25 gennaio 2025 e il mio compagno ed io ci siamo decisi a intraprendere una nuova avventura, facendo una cosa nuova, mettendoci alla prova e andando incontro ad una giornata faticosa ma sicuramente soddisfacente.
Erano già un paio di settimane che cercavo di progammare la ciaspolata al Rifugio Sebastiani, in compagnia con qualche amico, ma purtroppo, ogni volta che provavo a contattare qualcuno, ricevevo sempre disdette o risposte con mancanza di interesse. Dopo aver monitorato per giorni il meteo, ci siamo decisi ad andare in esplorazione, solo noi due.
Non avevamo mai fatto un'esursione in montagna con le ciaspole e, per di più, non avevamo neanche il materiale o l'abbigliamento tecnico per andare sulla neve... ciò nonostante, ce ne siamo fregati di tutto e abbiamo voluto partire e tentare nell'impresa!
Non siamo degli sprovveduti: prima di partire, mi sono fatta dare indicazioni più che precise da un mio amico che già aveva fatto questa escursione; in aggiunta, ho cercato l'itinerario preciso su WikiLok, con tanto di immagini del percorso, chilometraggio, pendenza e suggerimenti per gli escursionisti meno esperti; ovviamente le previsioni meteo sono state fondamentali per la scelta del giorno; e per ultimo, ma non meno importante, mi sono assicurata che ci fosse la possibilità di affittare le ciaspole direttamente all'inizio del sentiero, anche perché, in caso contrario, avremmo dovuto affittarle o comprarle preventivamente prima di partire da Roma, scelta poco oculata considerando che non sapevamo neanche se ci sarebbero servite realmente o se, considerando che quella sarebbe stata la nostra prima ciaspolata della nostra vita, ci fossero state altre occasioni in cui avremmo voluto e potuto poi utilizzare le ciaspole.
Insomma, tutto era stabilito e studiato nei minimi dettagli. Ci siamo preparati i panini per il pranzo, le borracce d'acqua, il vestiario (il più possibile "tecnico" e a strati, per non rischiare di sentire freddo o caldo), scarpe da trekking, zaino e via! Partenza prestino da Roma: avremmo voluto iniziare a camminare alle 9 circa, considerate 2 ore di macchina per arrivare all'inizio del percorso.
Siamo stati molto fortunati: il tragitto in macchina è stato molto facile e scorrevole ed una volta giunti a destinazione, abbiamo facilmente noleggiato le ciaspole (purtroppo solo in contanti, ahimè, unica pecca) e dopo aver gustato un veloce caffè al Rifugio Alantino, vicino al parcheggio di inizio sentiero, abbiamo iniziato la nostra escursione.
C'erano altri escursionisti che camminavano davanti a noi, tutti sulla 50ina e anche più grandi, ma tutti con abbigliamento super tecnico, che un po' ci faceva sentire inadatti... due scappati di casa! ahah! Nonostante tutto, siamo stati molto veloci e di buon passo abbiamo superato tutti quelli che si trovavano davanti a noi sul sentiero.
Il nostro obiettivo era raggiungere il rifugio prima delle 12, in modo da scendere a valle prima che facesse buio e, possibilmente, con il tepore del sole ancora a scaldarci sul cammino.
Effettivamente, siamo stati molto veloci! Man mano che camminavamo, il sentiero si faceva sempre più impegnativo: i primi chilometri sono praticamente pianeggianti, ma poi, l'ultimo terzo del tragitto, la salita diventa micidiale. Nonostante avessimo le ciaspole ai piedi, la neve fitta e densa rischiava a poco a poco di farti sprofondare ad ogni passo, con un conseguente aumento della fatica percepita per ritirare il piede su ed avanzare con l'altro. Non credo di aver mai visto così tanta neve in tutta la mia vita: ovunque mi girassi, tutto era bianco, candido. Le persone davanti a noi erano sempre più rare, man mano che avanzavamo di quota verso il Rifugio Sebastiani. Il freddo si faceva sentire solo se ci si fermava un attimo a riposarsi e riprendere fiato: il segreto in questi casi credo sia proprio quello di non fermarsi mai, ma di rallentare il passo fino a raggiungere una velocità che permette di continuare senza indugi, nonostante la fatica della fatica che sembrava assolutamente interminabile e sempre più ardua.
Riccardo gli ultimi chilometri mi stava dietro, un po' più affaticato di me in quanto, nei giorni precedenti, aveva fatto degli allenamenti che lo avevano stancato muscolarmente. Avrei voluto aspettarlo ma sapevo che se mi fossi fermata, non avrei ripreso facilmente il ritmo, spezzandolo tremendamente. Ho preferito continuare e aspettarlo in cima, così facendo, tra l'altro, gli avrei dato una spinta morale: vedendomi avanzare, non si sarebbe arreso e avrebbe continuato a salire fino all'obiettivo.
E così è stato! Ah che gioia indicibile raggiungere il tanto agognato rifugio! Riccardo è arrivato pochi minuti dopo di me e ci siamo finalmente rilassati, godendoci il paesaggio, mangiando il nostro pranzo al sacco e rifocillandoci con un bel po' di acqua. C'era già qualcuno al rifugio, ma fortunatamente non molte persone, che invece erano ancora sulla via, in arrivo sulla salita.
Abbiamo approfittato di quei momenti di calma per entrare nel piccolo rifugio, meraviglioso, e goderci una tazza di caffè con un bel pezzo di torta di mele: strameritato!
Sentendoci poi pronti e carichi di nuovo per tornare a valle, abbiamo rimesso le ciaspole ai piedi e ci siamo incamminati per la discesa. Sulla via abbiamo incrociato un paio di persone che si sentivano poco bene: non è una passeggiata di salute, e gli svenimenti per i cali di zuccheri sono sempre dietro l'angolo. Difatti, ho notato che per lo più c'erano gruppi di almeno 5 o 6 persone, a volte anche più grandi, e raramente si incrociavano escursionisti solitari. In escursioni come queste è sempre consigliato non avventurarsi mai da soli, soprattutto se non si è atleticamente allenati o non si è mai avuto esperienza di passeggiate in montagna.
Devo ammettere, non senza orgoglio, che io e Riccardo ce la siamo cavata alla stragrandissima! Abbiamo completato il nostro cammino in un tempo minore di quello preventivato dal mio amico, e comunque ce la siamo goduta, soprattutto la discesa! Non posso dire altrettanto della salita in effetti: l'ultima parte prima dell'arrivo al rifugio non è assolutamente per i deboli di cuore. Bisogna tenre duro, nervi saldi, e cercare di non pensare alla fatica. Concentrarsi sul ritmo del passo e sulla bellezza della natura che ci circondava è stato, a mio parere, un grandissimo aiuto che mi ha consentito di superare il momento di grande affanno per giungere all'obiettivo finale. Niente male per essere stata la nostra prima ciaspolata!
