I owe @phortun an explanation for my super-early waking up. Well, I wanted to see a Krampuslauf, a run of devils (or actually krampuses) in Mariazell, a marvellous pilgrim city in the Alps. Since driving there from Prague would take 5-6 hours and we did not want to sleep over there, I decided to book a bus tour by a travel agency. The Czechs may have noticed that I don’t see much point in that business and I was affirmed in my negative approach and opinion towards them. Even though the Krampuslauf was cancelled three days before the trip, nobody was noticed by the travel agency, which had obviously knew about it. Which actually sucks since the tour was called Mariazell and the Krampuslauf… Anyways, I could at least go through the town without crowds of tourists.
V sobotu jsme vyrazili na známý běh čertů, respektive krampusů, v Mariazellu, krásném poutním městečku v Alpách. A protože jízda autem z Prahy by sama o sobě zabrala 5-6 hodin a v Mariazellu jsme nechtěli přespávat, zaplatil jsem nám autobusový zájezd s cestovkou. Možná víte, že si o nich myslím, že jsou v dnešní době zbytečné. A můj názor se mi jen utvrdil. I když byl běh čertů zrušen tři dny předem, o čemž cestovka samozřejmě věděla, nikomu nedala vědět. Což je pochopitelně rána pod pás, když prodáváte zájezd jménem "Mariazell a běh čertů". No, alespoň jsme měli čas prohlédnout si Mariazell bez davů turistů.
The Mariazell Basilica is arguably the most important landmark in the town. The pilgrimages to Mariazell began in the 12th century and many Austrian, Italian or Moravian pilgrims still come every year.
Mariazellská bazilika je bezesporu nejdůležitější dominantou ve městě. Poutníci sem přicházejí už od 12. století a proudí do dnes, hlavně z Rakouska, Itálie a Moravy.
As you can see, Mariazell is surrounded by mountains, even though they are not the highest peaks of Austria by far.
Mariazell je obklopen horami, i když zdaleka nejde o nejvyšší vrcholky Rakouska.
Besides of the Krampuslauf, Christmas markets of Mariazell are also quite famous. And, usually, really large. They start earlier than elsewhere because of the Krampuslauf. However, the market was restricted as well.
Kromě běhu čertů se v Mariazellu konávají i známé, a většinou velké vánoční trhy. Kvůli běhu čertů navíc začínají dříve, než je obvyklé. Ale i ty byly letos limitované protipandemickými opatřeními.

To protect the town from krampuses, folks usually place painted angels around it. However, most of them weren’t installed this year. I met just a handful of them. I tried to take a picture of their aureole.
K ochraně města před čerty místní rozmisťují po okolí malované andělíčky. Letos ale většina z nich zůstala uskladněná, potkal jsem jich jen hrstku. Zkusil jsem je vyfotit i s jejich svatozáří.
Mariazell Advent crown is said to be the largest in the world.
O mariazellském adventním věnci se říká, že je největší na světě.
The Stations of the Cross were also closed as the paintings were covered by wooden coverings to protect them against winter weather. The Golgota was accessible, though.
Křížovou cestu jsme si také neužili, protože obrazy na ní byly zakryty dřevěnými deskami, které je mají chránit před zimním nečasem. Ale na Golgotu jsme se dostali.
