Unlike the past couple of locations, this one is not too popular place in Southern Iceland. The mountain is located in the middle of the huge sand fields and we decided to hike it.
But first We also visited the Hjörleifshöfði Hellir( cave ) that is inside the mountain wall there. Starwars fans might recognize this place because some scenes of one film have been filmed there. I am not a fan so I'm not sure which movie it was.
Quite a strange shape there.
The cliff wall.
After exploring the cave, we started the hike up the mountain nearby.
On the summit, there are a couple of graves. A Viking grave that is there since 875AD and 3 graves from 1900s of farmers that lived on this mountain.
We did not see a single soul hiking this trail besides us.
I don't have a good picture of the Viking grave, only one where we took a selfie on a timer. The stone mound next to us is the grave.
And here is the farmers grave.
Not many graves have views like this.
Locals say that this mountain is haunted and they experience different kinds of paranormal things when hiking there. They even go back there regularly to get these experiences. Well, I didn't see or experience anything of this kind.
Originally these farmers had a house down on the sand fields but glacial floods during volcano eruptions destroyed the house. So they built another one on the mountain to prevent this kind of disaster from happening again.
The house is not intact anymore but the foundation is still there.
You can see some shapes on the field, I am not sure what that is but if I have to guess then its an area for the animals.
Saw some sheep during our way down the mountain.
I wish we had a beautiful sunset and sunlight instead of a gray sky, would have gotten some amazing shots. The trail was really beautiful and unique. I think it took us about 1h and 30min to complete it. If you go to Iceland, I can recommend going off the beaten path and see this location.
