While having a leisure walk along Oroquieta City Park a few days ago, I notice these teenage boys skimboarding at the beach. I couldn't help but smile as I observed them having so much fun. I've seen some people doing this water sport or activity when I head to the beach. And countless times, I've wanted to take some photographs of them. However, nerves would get the best of me.
Gripping their boards, standing their ground, waiting for a few seconds before they run, then throw their boards in a calculated manner and with precision, jump onto them and let this motion take them forward. And as you watch them glide through the waters, you see them smiling, carefree, and enjoying the present moment while the others cheer them on. And sometimes, as onlookers, we wish we could just be like them.
I was actually taking some photographs from afar but I knew my photos would be better if I'm near them. So I took a leap of faith and shouted to one of the boys and asked to take photographs of them. He simply told me "sure". I was so happy and left my cousin with my other things in a hurry.
Because of my excitement, I forgot to introduce myself. I think the boys were thrilled as well because they were already showing me their moves right on.
Here are my favorite photos:
Above is my top pick. A headstand while on a skimboard! Now, that takes some talent! I was even more happier to get this shot of him!
This guy looked effortless as he jumped high with his skimboard right below him.
I think this photo is amazing too. The water followed suit as he flipped his skimboard on air.
Here is a set of multiple shots from one of the boys riding his skimboard like a pro. One could see the flow of movements as he moved through the surface of the water.
We were all having fun as these boys confidently rode their skimboards for me. Skimboarding may look easy but it takes time and practice to be good at this. They told me that they do this almost everyday when they have no classes. They also have a community of local skimboarders in the area. They call themselves Skimquieta. Skimboarding + Oroquieta (name of the place) = Skimquieta.
This duo also wanted to show this cool trick where one was lying down while the other jumped above him. I think this was not safe but they seem confident they were able to do it.
I don't know how long this impromptu shoot lasted but it was so worth it! I was happy to do a spontaneous activity during my recent trip here. More importantly, to connect and engage with the locals was humbling and heartwarming for me. I don't think I have anything else to say.
