Fleeting Momentary Diversion
Cattleya orchid enjoying wild Durban garden in a tree, high humidity with summer rain orchids in the tree derive food from falling leaves or small branches. National Flower of Brazil is Cattleya Orchid lasts relatively long lasting bloom.
Waited many years (about 15) for the orchid's grand appearance two years ago.
Second time it's flowering, previoustwo years ago when 4 blooms showcased, this time a single. One is better that none.
"Snake lily"* name used in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is the Scadoxus puniceus, also known as the paintbrush lily. The name we use is possibly from the green stems with speckled purple/black which look like our Natal bush snake, belong to the Amaryllis family.
Striking head is actually a dense cluster of tiny flowers, bright yellow pollen anthers on the stamens. Flower head is surrounded by protective bracts in the purple protection. These will pop up in unusual places around the garden to end of Spring (September - November), I have moved the bulbs into every corner of the garden over the years and they do tend to spread during dormant stage of Autumn to Winter.
Albuca nelsonii Candelabrum Lily a very hardy, robust, evergreen, clump forming bulb, strap-like bright green leaves, standing at around 1 meter in height where I planted them many years ago.
Plant flowers relatively often, I must have hit a happy spot with them in the native land in my garden. Actually have found them difficult to photograph over the years, many over exposed even though in the shaded area.
Bulbous plants like the Snake lily start pushing through the dry soil in July, sure indication Spring is on it's way once we see the full bloom. All three plants brighten up the garden into September when not cut, as warmer season appears with change of plantlife once again.
