Rain can be a very beautiful weather for photography, but it can also be very dangerous for communities that live near rivers or for urban areas that are not prepared to deal with long periods of rain.
Yesterday I had to go and run some errands in a neighborhood called "Barrio El Río" (River Neighborhood), named that way because it literally has a river that runs through it on one side. It was raining that day, and to my surprise, when I arrived I could see that the river was huge and the whole community was flooded!
La lluvia puede ser un clima muy hermoso para hacer fotografías, pero también puede ser muy peligrosa para comunidades que viven cerca de ríos o para urbanismos que no están preparados para lidiar con largos periodos de lluvia.
Ayer tuve que ir a hacer unas diligencias a un barrio llamado "Barrio El Río", se llama así porque literalmente tiene un río que lo atraviesa por un lado. Ese día estaba lloviendo, y mi sorpresa fue que al llegar pude ver que ¡el río estaba gigantesco y toda la comunidad estaba inundada!
What should be a normal street was completely brown, covered in water and mud. The community members were trying to remove the mud with shovels so that the water would not stagnate and could flow down the street.
Lo que debería ser una calle normal estaba totalmente marrón, cubierta de agua y barro. Los habitantes de la comunidad estaban intentando sacar el barro con palas para que el agua no se estancara y pudiera fluir calle abajo.
It was impressive to see the magnitude of the river at that moment. It was huge and raging, as you can see in the first photo. It had already dragged a couple of trees and was very close to reaching the level of the road.
Fue impresionante ver la magnitud del río en ese momento. Estaba gigante y furioso, como podrán ver en la primera foto. Ya había arrastrado un par de árboles y estaba muy cerca de llegar al nivel de la carretera.
The flow of this river is usually very small and its water is clear, but this day it was the complete opposite and it was causing havoc!
El caudal de este rio suele ser muy pequeño y su agua transparente, este dia era todo lo contrario y estaba causando estragos!
On my way back home, I took the highway route and at one point I had to pass under a bridge. To my surprise, I found that it was completely flooded and the passage was blocked.
De regreso a casa, tomé la ruta de la autopista y en cierto punto tenía que pasar por debajo de un puente. Para mi sorpresa, me encontré con que estaba totalmente inundado y el paso estaba bloqueado.
In other parts of the city, a retaining wall collapsed. Fortunately, at that time there was no one passing by and there were no injuries.
En otras partes de la ciudad, un muro de contención se derrumbó. Afortunadamente, en ese momento no había nadie pasando por el lugar y no hubo ningún herido.
I am concerned that the rains will continue to increase in intensity and that a disaster could occur, since my city is surrounded by rivers on all sides that could overflow and cause havoc.
For my part, there is not much I can do now. But as a photographer, what I can do is document everything to make these problems more visible and so that government entities can attend to them immediately.
Me preocupa que las lluvias sigan incrementando su intensidad y que pueda ocurrir algún desastre, pues mi ciudad está rodeada de ríos por todos lados que pueden salirse de sus cauces y causar estragos.
Por mi parte, no puedo hacer mucho. Pero como fotógrafo, lo que sí puedo hacer es documentarlo todo para hacer más visibles estas problemáticas y que los entes gubernamentales las atiendan inmediatamente.
