Por primera vez en mi vida soy testigo de un récord Guinness. Todo comenzó con la invitación que me hace Erich Hernández de asistir a la ocasión, ya desde el evento Coliseo FIFA se quedó con mi contacto por las fotos que le hice allí. Me lo pensé cuando me hizo la invitación por otras cosas que debía hacer ese día pero al final fui, bueno, se hace un poco obvio si estas leyendo esto.
Cuando llegue ya Erich estaba por comenzar a calentar. Lo acompañaba su entrenador y varios familiares que todo el tiempo estuvieron apoyándolo. Me invito a tomar asiento y a disfrutar del evento. Comenzó a calentar con estiramientos y a manejando el balón. Luego se cambió de ropa y note que se puso pesos en ambas piernas, ahí fue cuando note que el récord incluía tener pesos en las piernas que son un kilogramo y medio en cada una. Pero lo peor es que debes tener el control suficiente para que el balón no toque estos pesos, pues de pasar lo desviaría.
For the first time in my life, I am witness to a Guinness record. When I arrived Erich was already starting to warm up. His coach and several relatives who were always supporting him accompanied him. He invited me to take a seat and enjoy the event. He started warming up with stretching and ball handling. Then he changed clothes and I noticed that he put weights on both legs, that's when I noticed that the record included having weights on the legs that are a kilogram and a half on each one. But the worst part is that you must have enough control so that the ball does not touch these weights because if it did, it would deflect it.

A las 9 de la mañana en punto se dio comienzo y los jueces arrancaron el cronometro que duraría de 3 horas con 4 minutos. Imagínense tener que dominar el balón con ambos pies mientras estas en el piso y pesos en cada pierna. Yo no duraría ni 10 minutos, aunque tuviese buen control. Y es que aquí el control no lo es todo, a cada tanto tenía que estirar las manos que estaban recibiendo el peso del cuerpo y no quiero pensar en el dolor de columna que debe dar.
Lo que más me llamo la atención fue ver como lograba mantener la concentración a pesar de haber música, gente hablando (incluso con él), clientes del hotel pasando y en ocasiones hablando alto, pero sobre todo los fotógrafos de algunos medios que se acercaban mucho a Erich en ocasiones. Yo sin dudas hubiese perdido el enfoque. Es por ello que al final, le pregunte como lograba esta hazaña. La respuesta fue simple, Erich se enfoca siempre en arreglar constantemente el toque del balón y en contar los toques que le da con cada pierna. Mínimo necesita darle 150 toques con una pierna antes de cambiar a la otra por ser la cantidad mínima que le permite descansar bien la pierna que no está usando.

Without a doubt I would have lost focus. That is why in the end, I asked him how he achieved this feat. The answer was simple, Erich always focuses on constantly fixing the touch of the ball and on counting the touches he gives with each leg. He needs to give him at least 150 touches with one leg before changing to the other because it is the minimum amount that allows him to rest well the leg that is not used.

Y así fue como luego de un pote de helado y 3 horas después, uno de los jueces dio a conocer que ya Erich había roto su propio récord. Acto seguido se acercó al atleta para marcar el momento en que dejara de darle toques al balón en el cronometro. Un par de minutos después el balón paso a las manos de Erich y dejo caer su cabeza sobre una toalla para comenzar a recuperarse de todo ese ejercicio físico. Fue ahí cuando su entrenador comenzó a masajear sus piernas, soltar los pesos y ayudarlo a recuperarse. A partir de ahí llovieron las felicitaciones de todos, con entrevista incluida para la televisión. Ya me dijeron que ese mismo día dieron la noticia, pero algo extra de seguro les he traído con este humilde blog.

He then approached the athlete to mark the moment when he stopped giving touches to the ball on the chronometer.
