Today we'll be digging with a spade at an archaeological site of old slides extremely deep.

I've posted several travel memories here. Athens, Rome, Salzburg, Venice... They were all places you could visit anytime, even today, even on a weekend. But today, I'm going to take you somewhere completely different. We're going to cross the borders of Mordor and touch the very throat of hell.

Dnes zahrabeme rýčem na archeologickém nalezišti starých diapozitivů mimořádně hluboko.

Dával jsem tu už několik vzpomínek z cest. Athény, Řím, Salzburg, Benátky... Všechno to byla místa, která můžete navštívit kdykoliv i dnes, třeba o víkendu. Ale dnes vás pozvu úplně někam jinam. Překročíme hranice Mordoru a dotkneme se samotného chřtánu pekla.

Je první polovina 80. let, v USA je prezidentem Ronald Reagan, který nazývá Sovětský svaz Říší zla. A dobrodružství přitahuje...

Hradby Kremlu ukrývají nejen vládní budovy, ale i množství chrámů. Uspenskij sobor, zvonice Ivana Velikého, Chrám Zvěstování...

Tzar-bell and tzar-cannon. A bell that broke before it got cold and a cannon that would never fire. There are few things that characterize Russia as accurately as these exhibits.

Car-kolokol a car-puška. Zvon, který se rozbil dřív než vychladl a dělo, které by nikdy nevystřelilo. Máloco charakterizuje Rusko tak výstižně, jako tyto exponáty.

These impressive fountains were located in the "Exhibition of the Achievements of the National Economy". Does this exhibition still exist? Is there anything to exhibit? I confess I don't know.

Tyto impozantní fontány se nacházely v areálu "Výstavy úspěchů národního hospodářství". Existuje ještě tato výstava? A je co vystavovat? Přiznám se, že nevím.

Although Moscow is the largest and capital of Russia (and the former USSR), it is not a pretty city. Apart from the Kremlin and the immediate surroundings, there are practically no historical monuments. After all, back in the days of the Napoleonic wars, it was still a largely wooden city and therefore burnt down. And as for modern architecture, the opulent tastelessness of Stalin's times prevails there.

Actually, even the "historical" building of the A. S. Pushkin Museum of Visual Arts is essentially modern, from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. And what did the poet and writer Pushkin have to do with the visual arts? I don't know.

Ačkoliv je Moskva největší a hlavní město Ruska (a tehdejšího SSSR), není to pěkné město. Kromě Kremlu a nejbližšího okolí tam prakticky nejsou žádné historické památky. Ostatně ještě v dobách Napoleonských válek to bylo město z valné části dřevěné a proto shořelo. A co se týká moderní architektury, tam převládá opulentní nevkus stalinských dob.

Vlastně i "historická" budova Muzea výtvarných umění A. S. Puškina na spodní fotce je v podstatě novodobá, z přelomu 19. a 20. století. A co měl básník a literát Puškin společného s výtvarným uměním? Nevím.

Red Square looks a little better in the night lighting. Still, I can't help thinking that Lenin's mausoleum looks like something out of Star Wars. You'd almost expect Dart Vader to emerge from somewhere with a laser sword.

Rudé náměstí vypadá v nočním osvětlení o něco lépe. Ale i tak se nemůžu ubránit dojmu, že Leninovo mauzoleum vypadá jako něco z Hvězdných válek. Skoro by člověk očekával, že se odněkud vynoří Dart Vader s laserovým mečem.

Ostankinská televizní věž a památník kosmonautiky. Tímto výjevem bych tuto procházku Moskvou ukončil. Další dávka archívních diapozitivů bude zase za týden.
