Ghosts in the hall, part two

I will return to the photos from the ProART Festival in Olomouc and my experiment with long exposures and motion blur.

I'll describe what kind of improvisation it was. It was just a spur of the moment idea that I was not technically prepared for. I was shooting with a shutter speed of one to two seconds and I wanted the dancers to be blurred but the background as sharp as possible. So I needed a tripod - and I didn't have one.

Well, if we don't have a tripod, we can help ourselves by placing the camera on a table, shelf, windowsill or generally any solid surface. But that was also a problem: the dancing was very dynamic and the dancers were moving all over the place. Before I could get my camera set up in any way, crucial moments would be missed.

What to do, how to deal with it? I ended up taking most of these photos by sitting on the floor with my legs bent, feet apart, knees together, and stabilising the camera on an improvised 'tripod' made from my own legs and bones.

The results are more important than the methods. It was an experiment, it was improvisation, but given the circumstances I think it turned out pretty well.

Ještě jednou se vrátím k fotkám z ProART Festival v Olomouci a ke svému experimentování s dlouhým expozičním časem a pohybovou neostrostí.

Popíšu vám, jaká improvizace to byla. Byl to totiž ode mě jen takový okamžitý nápad, na který jsem nebyl technicky připravený. Fotil jsem s časem jedna až dvě sekundy, a chtěl jsem, aby tanečníci byli rozmáznutí, ale pozadí pokud možno ostré. Takže byl potřeba stativ - a ten jsem neměl.

Dobrá, když nemáme stativ, můžeme si pomoci odložením fotoaparátu na stůl, na polici, parapet nebo obecně jakýkoliv pevný podklad. Ale to byl taky problém: tanec byl velmi dynamický a tanečníci se pohybovali po celé místnosti. Než bych si foťák nějak nastavil, rozhodující okamžiky by mi utekly.

Co s tím udělat, jak si poradit? Nakonec jsem většinu těchto fotek dělal tak, že jsem seděl na zemi s pokrčenýma nohama, chodidla od sebe, kolena k sobě, a foťák jsem stabilizoval na improvizované "trojnožce" z vlastních nohou a kostí.

Výsledky jsou důležitější, než metody. Byl to experiment, byla to improvizace, ale s ohledem na okolnosti si myslím, že to dopadlo ještě docela dobře.
