Interacting with orca/killer whales is beyond words. It is mesmerising and captivating, as you can observe these amazing apex predators be themselves in their natural world. I have been lucky enough to interact with them constantly from 2012 and I believe I have forgotten more encounters than some people will ever have in their lives.
However, this encounter I will never forget with J34, aka Doublestuf off San Juan Islands in September on a sunset cruise. He foraged for salmon around us and under the vessel I was operating, as we were floating their engines off for what seemed like a life time. The twilight colours exploded into these rich oranges and pinks, whilst Doublestuf did his thing, snacking on salmon. The big reason why I won't forget this encounter is it was the last one I ever had with this guy. He was found washed up on a beach a few weeks later, as a result of a boat strike. Still breaks my heart that an Orca in his prime was taken too soon, especially, since his population is critically endangered and still struggling to this day.
