Hello.
How are you all my dear friends? I hope you are all fine. In today's post, I have shared the interesting history of Agra. I shared a few photos with you in this post that I had a few photos of during a visit to the Red Fort. The construction of the Agra Fort was started between 1565 and 1573 by Akbar. It is located on the western bank of the Yamuna River, about 2 km from the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan, Akbar's grandson, built white marble palaces within the fort.
Agra was once the capital of Delhi. Sikandar Lodi was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted his capital from Delhi to Agra. The fort was occupied by his son Ibrahim Lodi, who was then known as "Badalgarh" for nine years until he was defeated in the first battle of Panipat. When Babur sent his son Humayun to Agra, he captured the Badalgarh Fort and seized a huge treasure, including the famous Kohinoor diamond.
Humayun was crowned in 1530. After Humayun's defeat to Sher Shah Suri, the Mughals again lost the fort.
When Akbar reached Agra in the year 1558, he realized the importance of the city and made Agra his capital. Akbar recovered the remains of the Badalgarh Fort and rebuilt it with the red sandstone of Rajasthan. 4000 builders worked on it and it was completed in 1573 after a period of 8 years.
Shah Jahan, who was the grandson of Akbar, destroyed some of the fort's buildings to make his place, which still represents the Agra Fort. Towards the end of Shah Jahan's life, his son Aurangzeb placed him under house arrest in the fort of Musaman, from where Shah Jahan used to see the Taj Mahal.
The Marathas invaded the Agra Fort in the early 18th century, and the ownership of the fort changed several times. After his defeat in the third battle of Panipat at the hands of Ahmed Shah Abdali in 1761, he was decisively pushed out of the area for the next ten years.
Mahadji Shinde overtook the fort of Agra in the year 1785, and the Marathas maintained their reign until 1803 Second Anglo - Maratha War when they lost it to the British.
The fort was the site of a battle during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which coincided with a century of direct rule of British rule in India.
