The constitutional amendment for adult-use cannabis will make it so people 21 and older will be able to possess and distribute up to one ounce of marijuana, and they will also be allowed to cultivate up to three cannabis plants. Upon formal passage, legalization will become the law on July 1, 2021. The Department of Revenue will be charged with developing licensing regulations by April 1, 2022.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Troy Heinert (D) said that #southdakota has “a road map of other states and how they did it, and we can either choose to look at them and learn from them and see what works and make a plan that fits South Dakota or we can just negate the will of the people and say no we aren’t going to do this, and I would think that is a mistake.”
“I was personally opposed to these measures and firmly believe they’re the wrong choice for South Dakota’s communities,” Gov. #kristinoem (R), told The Argus Leader. “We need to be finding ways to strengthen our families, and I think we’re taking a step backward in that effort.”
