A while back someone gave us a 7 kg bag of Cornmeal. Around these parts we mostly use it to make porridge. Not my favorite.
At home we normally don't eat that type of porridge so after four month I used a bit more than a kilogram.
I considered dumping it or giving it away. Then I came across a recipe for long term storage of cornflower. To my delight. Something new to try.
The recipe is simple. Take 1 kg of cornflower and microwave it in an open bowl on high for 5 minutes. Then take it out and allow the steam to go out completely.
Now stir it thoroughly and microwave again on high for 5 minutes.
Take it out and leave it open to cool.
Pour it into a 2 litre plastic soft drink bottle - the type Coke use - and close.
You can store this for a very long time according to the person who posted the recipe.
So I tried it.
Turns out the kg did not fill the bottle completely. or my scale is out. That's OK though. When I have another empty bottle I'll do 2 kg and fill the gap on the first one.
All of this is part of an on-going effort to cut the cost of living and trying to beat the shortages that is profitised so widely nowadays.
This makes me think. If you were prepared for a food shortage you wouldn't have one.
That is not as weird as it sounds.
Our on tap convenience lifestyles tamed us properly. Before modern refrigeration and storage previous generations faced a food shortage every year. Once the growing season were done, they survived on whatever they could store.
They never called it a food shortage. You had food if you were not too lazy or stupid to prepare for winter. In some climates this is up to nine months of the year.
Today we talk about food shortages as if it is a natural disaster, unpreventable.
Just a thought.
So, anyway, if you get a hold of some cornflower you want to keep for a long time, now you know how to do it.
You can eat tomorrow at yesterday's prices.
I appreciate your support.
Live life to the fullest.
