Recently on a particular twitter space, the discussion was about all the things a doctor could be outside of the clinic and I could stop to wonder how seemingly unlimited we doctors were.
Its like we can really be superhumans like you all think we are Or should I say we can pose to be superhumans, working on the already existing popular psyche.
We could be great media tele-evangelists,like the popular aprokodoctor on twitter, CEOs, Tech gurus and so much so even while still practicing medicine. Something to love your MBBS degree for right.
I hope this will encourage people out there studying for the profession to try as much as possible to diversify even while trying to meet up with the academic standards. It is your diversification that we make your mbbs (SUPERHUMAN) degree really worth it and mostly save more live, and not just a life tied to the clinics and theatres. There are better ways of saving lives beyond just that and I can attest to it.
How ever from the topic of this writing, not really sure if it will work out as a rant or just vibes. But so much to be writing, about all the Doctor can be while in clinic.
He is so many things but I ll love to highlight these 3, a teacher, a comedian and a medicine man..lol
Most of these are from my experience though and I ll be glad if other doctors on the space can share there experiences.
I m known to be a funny (fun to be with) person and even as a Doctor I consider laughing a lot healthier than even drugs. In most of my consults I try to make the patient laugh a bit, sometimes I dont show that I am actually trying but once I see their smiling faces (often through the mask) I tick it good and move on with the discussion, even the most anxious and scared patients that come in go out looking much happier and rested. I trust this was a bit easier kudos to some comedy skills. I love to laugh and share my laughter, I love to bring relatable things to people and let them see how funny it is or themselves may sound when they make some little errors in taking care of themselves, this helps them to always remember to do the right things even when at home and easier remembered. Most of all it gets them cheerful.
Teaching is a very important aspect of clinical practice, asides teaching medical students or sharing ideas with colleagues, All patient should also be thought. I see it like this, every one patient I see should be able to prevent 10 others from seeing a Doctor at a point in time, because I ll help break down the risks and prevention of a disease to help other people learn from them and how to avoid having similar occurrences. This is what we call health promotion and awareness. A few people do this on twitter, I feel the best place to do it is in the consulting room. Those patients will understand and would spread the knowledge to others, well I often give health talks in village outreaches and churches. But there is hardly any followup as that of the clinic consultations.
Medicine comes in here as always, this is why they came in the first place, but knowing medicine and not knowing how to teach or calm them would not be as efficient.
Introducing a cure first without considering prevention is quackery and poor practice. A child who keeps having malaria every other month, the medicine here is not your antimalarial alone, but with an insecticide treated net and counselling on environmental sanitation.
No one want to come to the hospital in the first place except those who work there, so when the come the initial plan is to get them well and home at the best times.
I m finishing this post at a time a family member and a friends parent are currently hospitalized. I hope they recover fast and return to a better and healthier living soon.
I m sharing my prayers with all else there having health issues, you get well fast and completely.
