I wanted to write a title that didn't incite illegality, but I couldn't think of any other title because that's exactly what I want to talk about. I am not saying that everyone should do this on their trip to Bolivia, but I want to tell about my experience during my stay in this country. In all the nomadic travel I had done so far, I had always travelled by bus or plane, but the stretch I did sharing a car added the worry of having to refuel regularly. In the week we were in Argentina there was no problem with this, but when we were finally in Bolivian territory we had to make some contrivances to be able to fill up our tank at a good price 🙃.
Quería escribir un título que no incitara a la ilegalidad, pero no se me ocurrió otro porque justamente de eso quiero hablar. No digo que todo el mundo deba hacer esto en su viaje a Bolivia, pero quiero contar mi experiencia durante mi estadía en este país. En todo el viaje nómada que hice hasta ahora, siempre me había trasladado en micro o avión, pero el tramo que hice compartiendo un auto agregó la preocupación de tener que ir cargando combustible regularmente. En la semana que estuvimos en Argentina no hubo problema con esto, pero cuando finalmente estuvimos en territorio boliviano tuvimos que hacer algunos artilugios para poder llenar nuestro tanque a buen precio 🙃.
When I was travelling in the north of Argentina, in Salta to be precise, I met a Dutch guy with whom we improvised a trip to Bolivia in his little Suzuki Vitara. He had bought this car in Chile for only 4000 euros, a price that surprised me because of its cheapness but also because of the genius of his idea of acquiring his own vehicle for his trip in South America. As this trip would take about six months for him, it was definitely a good investment and buying it in Chile was a very smart thing to do, because in Argentina he would not have been able to buy anything with that money. His idea was to sell it again at the end of his trip in January and he did, so he got back the money he spent buying it 😃.
Cuando estaba de viaje en el norte de Argentina, precisamente en Salta, conocí a un chico holandés con el que improvisadamente organizamos un viaje a Bolivia en su pequeño autito Suzuki Vitara. Este auto él lo había comprado en Chile por solo 4000 euros, un precio que a mí me sorprendió por lo barato pero también por lo genial de su idea de adquirir un vehículo propio para su viaje en Sudamérica. Como este paseo se extendería para él durante unos seis meses, definitivamente fue una buena inversión y comprarlo en Chile fue algo muy inteligente, porque en Argentina no hubiese podido comprarse nada con ese dinero. Su idea era venderlo nuevamente al finalizar el viaje en enero y así fue, por lo que recuperó la plata que gastó al comprarlo 😃.
We travelled 1500 km from Salta, Argentina, to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.
As for filling up with fuel to be able to move around during the three weeks we travelled together in September 2024, we had our first problem at the La Quiaca-Villazón border, when we found out that we could only cross from Argentina into Bolivia with 20 litres of petrol in an extra jerry can. As we had already read that there were problems with refuelling foreigners in the neighbouring country, we had two 20-litre jerry cans full. We couldn't cross with the extra jerry can and thought of reselling it, but can you believe that the border police themselves recommended that we tell an illegal smuggler to bring the jerry can across in one of his carts? So that's what we did, and for only 30 Bolivian pesos ($4.5) a man took the jerry can to the other side: it was only 100 metres that he had to cross on foot, but for some reason they didn't ask him for anything to cross, unlike us who had the whole car searched when we finally got through to the other country 🙃.
En cuanto a cargar combustible para poder movernos durante las tres semanas que viajamos juntos en Septiembre 2024, el primer inconveniente lo tuvimos en la frontera de La Quiaca-Villazón, cuando nos enteramos que solo podíamos cruzar de Argentina a Bolivia con 20 litros de nafta en un bidón extra. Como ya habíamos leído que existían inconvenientes con la recarga de combustible a extranjeros en el país vecino, nosotros contábamos con dos bidones de 20 litros llenos. No podíamos cruzar con el bidón extra y pensamos en revenderlo, ¿pero pueden creer que la mismísima policía de la frontera nos recomendó decirle a un contrabandista ilegal que nos cruzara el bidón en uno de sus carritos? Así que eso hicimos, y por solo 30 pesos bolivianos ($4.5) un hombre nos llevó el bidón hasta el otro lado: eran solo 100 metros que tenía que cruzar a pie, pero por alguna razón a él no le pedían nada para cruzar, a diferencia de a nosotros que nos revisaron todo el auto cuando finalmente pasamos al otro país 🙃.

As the car was a 1997 model, the fuel consumption averaged 9 kilometres per litre, so we had to refuel continuously to keep going. Once on the other side, we saw what we had already read on the internet, and that was the existence of a fuel price differential for locals and foreigners. While the price of fuel was very cheap in Bolivia, the cost for foreigners (red) was more than double what locals (blue) paid. Of course, in order to respect the local price, they asked for identification, but we were a Dutchman and an Argentinian in a Chilean car, so the foreignness was undoubtedly noticeable 😂.
Como el auto era un modelo de 1997, el consumo de gasolina era en promedio de 9 kilómetros por litro, por lo que teníamos que recargar nafta continuamente para seguir avanzando. Una vez del otro lado, vimos lo que ya habíamos leído en internet, y se trataba de la existencia de un precio diferencial en el combustible para los locales y los extranjeros. Si bien el precio del combustible era muy económico en Bolivia, el costo para extranjeros (rojo) era más del doble de lo que pagaban los locales (azul). Por supuesto para respetarte el precio de local te pedían una identificación, pero nosotros éramos un holandés y una argentina en un auto chileno, así que indudablemente se nos notaba lo extranjero 😂.

But as they say ‘the devil is in the detail’, we had also read about how to avoid being charged the higher price. To do this, we had to personally talk to each service station attendant and offer to pay an intermediate price in cash. If the local price per litre was 3 Bolivian pesos and the foreign price was 8, we offered to pay them 5. In this way, they billed us as local, and kept the difference of 2 pesos for each litre of petrol we filled. Of all the gas stations we visited, only one refused us this, one demanded that we pay 6 pesos per litre, and all the others accepted the deal without any problems 😂.
Pero como "hecha la ley, hecha la trampa" dicen, también habíamos leído sobre cómo evitar que nos cobraran el precio más caro. Para hacerlo, teníamos que hablar personalmente con cada encargado de la estación de servicio y ofrecerle pagar un precio intermedio en efectivo. Si el precio por litro local era de 3 pesos bolivianos y el extranjero era 8, nosotros ofrecíamos pagarles 5. De esta forma, ellos nos facturaban como local, y se quedaban con la diferencia de 2 pesos por cada litro de nafta que cargaramos. De todas las gasolineras que visitamos, solo en una nos rechazaron esto, en una nos exigieron pagar 6 por litro y en todas las demás aceptaron el trato sin problemas 😂.

Paying only $0.75 per litre for petrol in Bolivia was also very convenient for our travel budget as we used a lot of it. In Argentina, petrol currently costs $1 per litre, regardless of whether you are a foreigner or a local, and I think this makes it easier for those travelling in my country. The whole thing about filling up on the other side was very curious, although until the last minute we were in doubt as to whether they would accept the deal or not. We also read about people who couldn't buy fuel because they are foreigners, but fortunately this was not our case. I would say this is not the right thing to do, but it is what we did and it worked for us: read but don't judge 😂.
Pagar solo $0.75 por litro de nafta en Bolivia también fue muy conveniente para nuestro presupuesto viajero ya que utilizamos bastante. En Argentina, actualmente la nafta cuesta $1 por litro, sin importar si sos extranjero o local y creo que esto facilita las cosas para quienes viajan en mi país. Todo el asunto de cargar nafta del otro lado fue muy curioso, aunque hasta último minuto estábamos con la duda de si aceptarían el trato o no. También leímos sobre gente a la que directamente no les quieren vender combustible por ser extranjeros, pero por suerte no fue nuestro caso. Diría que hacer esto no es lo correcto, pero es lo que nosotros hicimos y nos funcionó: lean pero no juzguen 😂.
