The people who hold power and have the capacity to solve it are silent about the hunger and poverty that persist in the world. While we sit scrolling our phones through pictures of fancy foods, there are millions of people in the world who go to bed hungry every night.

The number of hungry people in this century is a shame for humanity; no mincing words here. We live in a world of plenty where food production is at its peak in history regarding efficiency and productivity. However, it is estimated that 690 million populations remain victims of chronic hunger despite abundance.
How can this be?
What justifies such suffering amid technological breakthroughs and advanced economies?
Root causes of hunger are many but they all emanate from the same poisonous tree: greed and indifference. The fact that multinational corporations are making billions in profits while farmers can’t feed their families points to something terribly wrong. This is because natural resources are being exploited without mercy and distribution systems that leave some people with too little food make it impossible for everyone to have enough.
But hold on; that’s not all. Why don’t we also think about how our society is wasteful to the extent of throwing away tonnes and tonnes of food, which is perfect for consumption while many children go to bed hungry? Look at this. One-third! This is death by excess in a world of grinding poverty, and contempt for people struggling to put food on the table.
And don’t even talk about the political games and bureaucratic obstacles which prevent any well-meant steps. Hunger seemed to remain like a stubborn stain that would not be removed, despite numerous summits, conferences, resolutions and even worse.
Politicians give big promises and make much fuss but when they are expected to distribute resources or pass their policies that could really matter, they have collective amnesia.
So what is the way forward?
Where do we start in order to solve this problem of huge dimensions of ending hunger once and for all?
It means reordering our global priorities in the most drastic fashion possible. Over and above everything else, that starts by prioritizing food as a basic human right, then identifying those who obstruct progress must become an essential task.
Above all else, I believe that the systemic inequalities leading to hunger must be confronted.
This involves enacting policies that support small-scale farmers while also guaranteeing good payment rates and working conditions for farm workers. Moreover, it includes investing into sustainable agricultural practices protecting our environment for posterity besides ensuring reliable food supplies.
In addition, we should face the matter of food waste headlong as well. Individuals, organizations and even governments should make a consorted effort to minimize wastage at all points of the distribution chain.
From the farm to the plate we have to keep our eyes open in order to prevent wastages and use inputs efficiently.
Moreover, we need more transparency and responsibility from our elected leaders and corporate managers. Like the Blockchain system friends. We are unable to tolerate insincere assurances that do not lead anywhere any more.
The leaders must take responsibility for what they do or fail to do and actually bring about actions that would completely eradicate hunger in this world.
It is crucial to remember finally that the existing world hunger is a collective sin. It exemplifies how we are globally falling short of putting our fellow human’s basic needs as the top priority.
However, this does not need to be the case. Demanding for action from the mighty, holding them responsible for their acts or non-acts and combining efforts in making practical remedies can help us overcome poverty if not eradicate hunger at all. No more alibis; no more hollow language- time for doing something!
