Today my daughter and I went out to a little place called Camp Roadhouse which is a small conglomerate of 4 stores all owned by the same people one of the main roads here in Oudtshoorn.
It was originally started in 1939 during the beginning of WWII and was located down the road from the infantry school, army base and airstrip which are all still active (see the last picture from in front of the infantry school). I was in search of biscuits for a visit from my sister and brother in law who we haven't seen in over a year due to the restrictions on movement. We haven't been to this little set of shops before and seeing as they have such a rich history, I really wanted to support this local place.
When we stepped out of the car, the smell of ginger biscuits hit us like a wall of "hmmmm so good". One of the shops here which is called Camp Bakery is where they freshly bake all the biscuits, rusks and savouries that you can buy in the shop next door or sit down to eat at the little restaurant. The staff were amazingly friendly, welcoming and helpful and even admired the fact that Lory (my daughter) decided today was a good day to be unique and wear one pink sock and one yellow sock.
I kinda fell in love with this little place. It was so cozy and ... it had a whole section for biscuits and a whole section for wool. I mean winter here I come with a smile lol.
While many of the more touristy places seem to have a rather snooty feel to them, this one didn't at all. It was such a down to earth relaxed atmosphere and there was nothing pretentious about it.
We came away with some delicious loot which probably won't last through the weekend, but it was also great being able to find diabetic friendly rusks for my brother-in-law. The pecan nut rusks are absolutely divine!
Considering these are hand made fresh daily on the premises, they were also very reasonably priced. Needless to say we left happy and drove away in a car smelling like ginger biscuits from being parked there.
