This time I want to talk about the speed of light and a theory that fiction brought to us called "Warp Drive" trying to 'break the speed of light', a barrier that Einstein left to humanity and that until now has not been able to be broken
Speed of light
The speed of light is an important concept in physics and it is often referred to as the universal speed limit. It is the maximum speed that any object can travel, and it is impossible to exceed this speed. Light travels at a constant speed of 299,792 km/s (186,282 miles/s) in a vacuum, which is fast enough to go around the world 7.5 times in one second. Despite its incredible speed, light cannot break the laws of physics and cannot be exceeded.
The reason why the speed of light is a universal speed limit is due to the laws of special relativity. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, the laws of physics are the same for all observers regardless of their relative motion. This means that no matter how fast one observer is moving, they will always measure the same speed of light. Another reason why the speed of light cannot be exceeded is due to the nature of light itself. Light is made up of photons, which are massless particles. No other type of energy or matter can move faster than light. The fact that the speed of light cannot be exceeded is also seen in the nature of the universe. This means that it is not possible to move faster than the speed of light, because even the universe itself cannot exceed the speed of light.
The concept of Warp Drives has been around since the 1950s, when it was featured in the novel, Islands of Space by John W. Campbell. But it took until 1994 for a physicist, Miguel Alcubierre, to propose a radical technology that could allow for faster than light travel. Alcubierre suggested that large amounts of negative energy could create a bubble containing the travelers, which would then warp space and effectively travel faster than light.
Since then, the idea of warp drives has been further developed. In 2018, physicist Erik Lentz published a paper in which he argued that positive, or ordinary, energy is enough to create a warp drive bubble if you take advantage of hyperbolic space-time instead of linear. Lentz suggested that a soliton, or a wave function in space-time, could be used to travel faster than light. He also proposed that, if we could generate a sufficient amount of energy for a warp drive, no time paradoxes would occur.
The idea of warp drives has captivated the popular imagination for decades. But is it really feasible? The amount of energy needed for a warp drive is about one-tenth of the sun’s mass, an amount that is currently beyond our capabilities. And even if we could generate this energy, the effects of Hawking Radiation on the travelers still remain a concern.
But if warp drives could become a reality, the implications for humanity would be immense. We could explore distant exoplanets, visit faraway galaxies, and potentially colonize other Earth-like planets. We could even travel back in time and explore different eras. These possibilities have led to a resurgence of interest in warp drives, and have sparked a new wave of research into the technology.
Warp drives are still in the realm of science fiction, but the idea of bending time and space to travel faster than the speed of light is tantalizing. As our understanding of the universe expands, we may be able to make our dreams of warp drives a reality. Until then, we can only wonder what other worlds and what other times await us out there in the vastness of space.
