In this second installment regarding the Embedded System, where I explain the Architectural Style of these special systems, with emphasis on Hardware.

En en esta segunda entrega referente al Sistema Empotrado o Embebido (Embedded System), donde explico el Estilo Arquitectónico de estos sistemas tan especiales, haciendo énfasis en el Hardware.
In Part One: Concept and Context the Embedded System was defined, its structure was exposed and its common thread was handled. If you haven't read it yet, I invite you to do so.

When the ES Framework is taken to develop a specific device or product, the hardware and software components must be given an operational description to support the requirements in the design phase, such as the physical interconnection between them. And at a later stage, you get to incorporate performance and cost.
Cuando se toma la Estructura del SE para desarrollar un dispositivo o producto específico, a los componentes de Hardware y Software hay que darles descripción operacional fundamental para su diseño según los requerimientos, como la interconexión entre ellos. Y en una fase más adelante, se llega a incorporar rendimiento y costo.

An Architectural Style defines (at a high level) the Architecture of a System.

The conceptual structure and logical organization of a device with processing capability, from the point of view of its use or design; is a particular realization of this.
La estructura conceptual y la organización lógica de un dispositivo con capacidad de procesamiento, desde el punto de vista de su uso o diseño; es una realización particular de esto.
The architecture of an ES follows the structure of hardware and software, therefore, to create a conceptual design of the ES, it is necessary to take into consideration the hardware, the software, and its integration..
La Arquitectura de un SE sigue la estructura de Hardware y Software, por tanto para plasmar un diseño conceptual del SE hay que tomar en consideración el Hardware, el Software y su integración.

As for the Hardware, emphasis is placed on the Internal Operating Modules. Also, to facilitate the explanation, a Processor is taken into consideration in the system. Then, we will give brushstrokes to turn them into Heterogeneous ES from their structure..
En cuanto al Hardware se hace énfasis en los Módulos Internos de Operación. Para facilitar la explicación, inicio tomando en consideración que existe un Procesador involucrado en el sistema. Luego tocaremos cuando existen SE Heterogéneos.

The Conventional Architecture takes advantage of the processor's resources in terms of its interconnection power using fully identified input/output mappings. Figure 1 shows the dependency of each module to the Processor to its full extent. For example, the Memory Module has an exclusive connection to the Processor and will not be used by any other module in the system.
La Arquitectura Convencional saca provecho de los recursos del procesador en cuanto a su poder de interconexión mediante mapeos de entrada/salida, plenamente identificados. En la Figura 1 se pone de manifiesto la dependencia de cada módulo al Procesador en toda su extensión. Ejemplo, el Módulo de Memoria tiene conexión exclusiva con el Procesador y no será usada por otro módulo en el sistema.
There is a dedicated connection for each module, where there are as many communication lines as required. Hence, the size of the device to be developed is compromised and so is the performance. All this is accompanied by the control and supervision of the operation status of each module and each communication line. It can be anticipated that the Embedded Software follows conventional guidelines..
Existe una conexión dedicada para cada módulo, donde hay tantas líneas de comunicación como se requiera. De ahí, que el tamaño del dispositivo a desarrollar queda comprometido y el rendimiento también. Todo esto va acompañado del control y supervisión de los estados de operación de cada módulo y de cada línea de comunicación. Se puede adelantar, que el Software Empotrado sigue lineamientos convencionales.
Currently, developments with low requirements fall within this architecture. However, it is not suitable when applications with high data flow exchange are required, due to the limitations of its resources and demands in its requirements..
En la actualidad los desarrollos con bajos requerimientos caen dentro de esta arquitectura. Sin embargo, no es adecuada cuando se requiera aplicaciones con alto intercambio de flujo de datos, debido a las limitaciones de sus recursos y demandas en sus requerimientos.

Little by little the design of the ES has evolved towards modularity that initially they did not have, for this, the support has been based on components connected, to a certain extent, among themselves, that can perform different independent and cooperative tasks, each one from its processor. As a consequence, communication between devices can be established using, for example, the Inter-integrated Circuit (I2C) serial ports..
Poco a poco el diseño de los SE ha evolucionado hacia una modularidad que inicialmente no tenían, para ello, el soporte se ha basado en componentes conectados, en cierta medida entre sí, que pueden realizar diferentes tareas independientes y con alguna cooperación supervisada desde un Componente Primario o Maestro. Como muestra se tiene el I2C (Inter-integrated Circuit).
Figure 2 presents an architecture that uses the resource of a Processor to establish bidirectional serial communications that it shares with other components of the system. It is worth noting that the other components must also have the same type of communication capabilities. For example, the Memory Module and the Digital Subsystem share two (2) communication lines governed by the Processor, and therefore, the Processor exercises the control and supervision of such serial link.
La Figura 2 presenta una Arquitectura que se vale del recurso de un Procesador para establecer comunicaciones seriales bidireccionales que comparte con otros componentes del sistema. Vale la pena destacar, que lo otros componentes, también deben tener facultades del mismo tipo de comunicación. Por ejemplo, el Módulo de Memoria y el Subsistema Digital comparten dos (2) líneas de comunicación que gobierna el Procesador, y por tanto, este ejerce el control y supervisión de dicho enlace serial.
For several years, manufacturers have provided these digital resources to processors and components related to the other modules and have provided facilities in their associated embedded software. That is why it is common to see intelligent sensors whose architecture is conceived in this way.
Desde hace varios años, los fabricantes han dotado de estos recursos digitales a procesadores y componentes relacionados a los otros módulos y, han otorgado facilidades en su Software Empotrado asociado. Por eso es común ver sensores inteligentes cuya arquitectura está concebida de esta forma.
In addition, the issues that arise from the use of conventional architectures are somewhat diminished. Just look at the number of communication lines that are required at the serial level. Better yet, they can coexist as shown in Figure 2 where the Analog Subsystem is Conventional and the others based on Serial Communication.
Además, que los asuntos que sobrevienen por la utilización de Arquitecturas Convencionales, de alguna manera son disminuidas. Basta con ver el número de líneas de comunicación que son requeridas a nivel serial. Y mejor aún, pueden coexistir como se indica en la Figura 2 donde el Subsistema Analógico es Convencional y los otros basados en la Comunicación Serial.

It is an architecture focused on data communication, therefore each module shares a communication link. That is, each module has built-in or integrated communication ports under the most widespread standards of embedded communication networks, either those that require physical wirings such as CAN (Controller Area Network) or wireless communications such as ZigBee. In Figure 3 all the modules of the system share a communication link and its behavior will depend on the communication protocol that is hosted in each component and then in the application, a subject that I will develop in another post.
Es una Arquitectura centrada en la comunicación de datos, por tanto cada módulo comparte un enlace de comunicación. Es decir, cada módulo tiene incorporado o integrado puertos de comunicación bajo los estándares más extendidos de redes de comunicación empotrada, bien aquellos que necesitan de un cableado físico como el CAN (Controller Area Network) o se trate de comunicaciones inalámbricas como ZigBee. En la Figura 3 todos los módulos del sistema comparten un enlace de comunicación y su comportamiento dependerá del protocolo de comunicación que se aloja en cada componente y luego en la aplicación, asunto que desarrollaré en otro post.
Here, each module is treated as a node in a network and its behavior is guided by what is established in this area of knowledge. This is a clear example of the integration of Computing and Communication. Internally, this arrangement is an Embedded LAN and has several years of developments in different applications and is still growing. For example, the operating modules of automobiles, robots, aircraft, even household appliances, are network-based.
Aquí, cada módulo es tratado como un nodo de una red y su comportamiento es guiado por lo establecido en esta área de conocimiento. Esto es un ejemplo claro de la integración de la Computación y la Comunicación. Internamente, esta disposición es una LAN Empotrada y tiene varios años de desarrollos en diferentes aplicaciones y sigue creciendo. Por ejemplo, los módulos operaciones de los automóviles, robots, naves aéreas, hasta electrodomésticos, están basados en red.
It is clear that if a system is prepared at the network level from its design, it has an advantage in terms of incorporating interconnection to networks of greater scope. This brings with it the possibility of using IoT services or any other technology that is coming out of the oven at this moment. Therefore, communication systems are becoming more and more important in ES design.
Está claro que si un sistema está preparado a nivel de red desde su diseño, lleva ventaja en cuanto a la incorporación a la interconexión a redes de mayor alcance. Lo que trae consigo hacerse de los servicios de IoT o cualquier otra tecnología que esté saliendo del horno en este instante. Por lo que, cada vez es mayor la importancia que adquieren los sistemas de comunicación en el diseño de SE.
There may be ES developments that contemplate the presence of several Processors, which may be different. The necessary elements for the interconnection of its elements must be incorporated into the explained Architecture. In the present case, when the components are part of the Structure, they are called Heterogeneous ES.
Pueden manifestarse desarrollos de SE que contemplen la presencia de varios Procesadores, que pueden ser diferentes. A las Arquitecturas explicadas hay que incorporarles los elementos necesarios para la interconexión de sus elementos. En el caso que nos ocupa, cuando los componentes forman parte de la Estructura son llamados SE Heterogéneos.

Figure 4, which accompanies this section, is an example of a Heterogeneous Architecture where the SE Architecture with Serial and Conventional Communication coexist. Regarding the Serial in this arrangement, some Modules govern the operation and others that return responses, in the literature, they are called Master-Slave configuration.
La Figura 4 que acompaña a esta sección, es un ejemplo de una Arquitectura Heterogénea donde coexiste la Arquitectura del SE con Comunicación Serial y la Convencional. Respecto a la Serial en esta disposición hay Módulos que rigen el funcionamiento y otros que devuelven respuestas, en la literatura se les llama configuración Maestro-Esclavo.
It can be seen that Processor 1 is the Master and Processor 2 and the Memory and Communication modules are Slaves, sharing the same serial connection. In addition, Processor 2 conventionally guides the Digital Subsystem. Leaving to Processor 1 the pertinent actions with the Analog Subsystem. This could be an example when it is required to share resources between processors according to their physical and computational facilities while reducing the size and increasing the performance of the final product.
Se aprecia que el Procesador 1 es el Maestro y el Procesador 2 y los módulos de Memoria y Comunicación son Esclavos, comparten una misma conexión serial. Además, el Procesador 2 de forma convencional guía al Subsistema Digital. Dejando al Procesador 1 las acciones pertinentes con el Subsistema Analógico. Esto podría ser un ejemplo cuando se requiera compartir recursos entre los procesadores según sus facilidades físicas y de cómputo, a la vez de reducir el tamaño y aumentar las prestaciones del producto final.
Processors could be FPGAs, SoCs, DSPs, and/or GPUs. It is important to note that these architectures are gaining favor again because complex, low-cost designs can be addressed with some ease for specific applications.
Los Procesadores podrían ser FPGA, SoC, DSP y/o GPU. Es importante señalar que estas arquitecturas están ganando nuevamente adeptos debido a que se pueden abordar diseños complejos y de bajo costo con alguna facilidad para aplicaciones específicas.
Similarly, they can be implemented in an Embedded Network Architecture, where each component must have the communication resources to form a network. Every day, processors and other integrated circuits are being equipped with these resources and facilities for network-centric computing.
De igual forma, se pueden implementar en una Arquitectura basada en Redes Empotradas, donde cada componente debe tener los recursos de comunicación para que formen una red. Cada día tanto a los procesadores como otros circuitos integrados los están dotando con estos recursos y facilidades de la computación centrada en redes.

A Manera de Cierre de esta Segunda Parte
We have gone a step further in the topic of Embedded Systems by explaining the Architectural Style by taking a look at the Hardware, where we progressively go into its Architecture, being these Conventional, Serial, and Network-Based.
Hemos dado un paso más en el tema de los Sistemas Empotrados al explicar acerca del Estilo Arquitectónico dando una mirada al Hardware, donde progresivamente entramos en sus Arquitecturas, siendo estas Convencional, Serial y Basada en Redes.
Of course, an architecture was presented within what is known as the Heterogeneous ES when they are part of the Structure. Where aspects that have to do with the use of the facilities and resources of both Hardware and Software to obtain devices according to their design specifications are pointed out.
Por supuesto, se presentó una arquitectura dentro de los que se conoce como los SE Heterogéneos cuando forman parte de la Estructura. Donde se señalan aspectos que tienen que ver con el aprovechamiento de las facilidades y recursos tanto de Hardware como de Software para obtener dispositivos acordes a sus especificaciones de diseño.
The ES Architectures are important because they help to formulate a conceptual model of the final product and incorporate the functional and non-functional requirements that are part of its development, to achieve the construction of the final product.
Las Arquitecturas de los SE con importantes porque ayudan a formular un modelo conceptual del producto final e incorporar los requerimientos funcionales y no funcionales que forman parte de su desarrollo, para conseguir la construcción del producto final.
