Hello stemsocialist! Aristotle here again.
In this video, I talked about the chemistry of lipids. I explained the classification of lipids and provided examples of lipids.
Lipids are organic substances that are:
I.Insoluble in water,
II.Soluble in organic solvents (like chloroform, ether, and benzene). They are esters of fatty acids with alcohol.
Classification of Lipids
In this video, I’ve grouped lipids into three main categories:
1. Simple Lipids These are esters of fatty acids bound to alcohols. Depending on the alcohol type, they split further into:
Neutral fats (Triglycerides): No charge here—just fatty acids + glycerol (e.g., olive oil, butter).
Waxes: These use long-chain alcohols instead of glycerol (e.g., beeswax, earwax). Fun fact: waxes are huge in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals!
(Check the video for deeper details—I’ve explained their structures and uses!)
2. Compound (Complex) Lipids
These are fatty acid + alcohol combos with extra "accessories" (prosthetic groups). They include:
(i). Phospholipids (like lecithin in egg yolks)—key for cell membranes.
(ii). Glycolipids (e.g., cerebrosides in nerve tissue)—sugars attached!
(i). Lipoproteins (think LDL/HDL cholesterol)—fat transporters in blood.
(The video explains better!)
3. Derived Lipids
These pop up when simple or compound lipids break down but still act like lipids. Examples:
(i). Fatty acids (palmitic acid, oleic acid),
(ii). Steroids (cholesterol, hormones like estrogen),
(iii). Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Bonus: Miscellaneous Lipids Some lipids don’t fit neatly—like carotenoids (plant pigments) or terpenes (essential oils).
