When I read about Dengue Infection for the first time, what came to my mind was, thank goodness this infection is not prevalent in Nigeria, because the amount of mosquitoes that bite some of us on a daily basis is so much that so many Nigerian's would have died from this disease. Thanks for visiting my blog today friends, as I will be writing about Dengue Infection in this article and it is my hope that after spending time reading, you will have more understanding of the topic.
Dengue is pronounced (Deng-gey), and it is an illness caused by mosquitoes, occurring in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Dengue fever could come off in a mild or severe form, mild cases of dengue fever would cause a high fever and other associated flu-like symptoms while the severe stage of dengue fever can cause heavy bleeding, a drop in blood pressure, and even death. The infection is not new as millions of cases of dengue infection happen worldwide every year, and it is most common in Southeast Asia, Western Pacific Island, Latin America, and even Africa (whoops, I was wrong to assume that it is less common here then), the disease is now even spreading to new regions, there has been a reported local outbreak in Europe and some southern regions in the United States, now it's time to watch how we get ourselves exposed to mosquitoes.
The case of severe dengue infection is not so common but it could cause severe complications like plasma leakage, organ impairment, and even result in death when not managed appropriately. Dengue viruses get spread to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, the mosquitoes themselves get the infection after they must have bitten a person who has the dengue virus in the blood, creating a strong possibility of spreading the virus from one person to another. There is a new vaccine that has been introduced for children between the age of 9-16, especially in areas with common endemic spread, although the vaccine is not usually approved for visiting U.S. travelers, it is only made available for those living residentially in those places. However, some other regions have vaccines that can help prevent the dengue virus, the vaccine is made available for those between the age of 9-45 but World Health Organization(WHO) has advised that these vaccines be made available only to persons who have had a previously confirmed case of dengue virus infection.
The symptoms of the dengue virus begin to show from 4-6 days after an infection has happened, the symptoms include;
Serious joint and pain in the muscle.
Serious headache.
Severe high fever.
Nausea.
Vomiting.
Feeling of pain behind the eyes.
Unusualskin rash which would begin to show 2-5 days after the fever has started.
Bleeding in the nose, gum, and easy bruising.
The symptoms of the dengue virus in its mild stage could be mistaken for flu or other infection types, younger children who have never experienced the infection before are the ones who usually have milder cases, unlike older children and adults. Those with a weak immune system and those with a second or recurring stage of the virus, are believed to be at a greater stage of developing a hemorrhagic fever. Doctors are able to diagnose dengue infection with a blood test to check for the presence of the virus.
The best way to prevent the dengue virus is to prevent the bite from an infected mosquito especially if you are living or traveling to tropical regions, in order for you to do this, you have to protect yourself and make efforts to protect yourself from every type of mosquito bite. To protect yourself from mosquito bites;
- You need to make use of mosquito repellants even when you are indoors.
- When you get outdoors, ensure to make use of long-sleeved shirts, socks, and long pants, remember that, your health is much more important than fashion.
- If there is an available air conditioner, use it when indoors.
- Make sure that your window and door screens are firmly secure and there is no hole in them, if your sleeping areas are not screened or have a functional air conditioner, stay under a mosquito net.
- Speak to your doctor the moment you begin to have symptoms of a dengue virus.
In order to reduce the level of mosquito population in the area where you stay, get rid of places where mosquitoes could possibly breed, and take out old cans, tires, and flower pots that are used to collect rain. If one member of your family gets dengue disease, look for options to protect the rest of your family members, as the mosquitoes that infected that family member can still spread the infection to the other members of the family.
Conclusion.
Remember that, severe dengue is a medical emergency requiring instant medical emergency, so if you experience the warning signs or mild phase, it is necessary to check into a hospital for medical care immediately. The best thing is to prevent the bite of mosquitoes completely especially if you stay in regions where there is a great rise of mosquito infection.
