Soft robots can manipulate fragile objects and interact with us without risk of injury, while multimodal AI systems connect vision, sound and touch for more natural responses and in a way with awareness of the environment, this means robots capable of reacting not only to commands but also to complex sensory stimuli such as a look, a tone of voice or a gentle touch.
This opens space for robotic caregivers for the elderly, assistant teachers for children and even emotional or creative companions for lonely humans. It is a potential that affects not only the market, but also the social fabric, and to deal with ethical risks, transparency protocols and clear limits for surveillance are being studied, especially in applications involving children or the elderly.
The big leap will be when soft-body technologies, ultra-dense memory and advanced AI converge on integrated platforms, making androids versatile, economical, perceptive and maybe, who knows, called a new species, albeit a synthetic one.
Deep down, this journey does not seem to be only technological, but also philosophical, by trying to create machines that look and act like we are being forced to look again at humanity itself. What is intelligence? What is true emotion? It will be that by designing increasingly realistic androids we end up rediscovering the value of human contact, of genuine gaze, of the biological empathy that only a living being can offer. It would be good because currently most of us interact much more with a screen than directly with other human beings.
It may be that as we approach future “conscious” machines we will end up valuing even more what no machine can do.
