Abraham Loeb's proposal to intercept the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas

A proposal was published by Abraham Loeb, Adam Hitber and Adam Colb who are collaborators of Abraham Loeb to send NASA's Juno spacecraft that is exploring the Jupiter system to intercept the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas.

Abraham Loeb speculates with the possibility that it is a hostile extraterrestrial ship, at the moment he is doing comet things, in case it is a hostile extraterrestrial ship, Abraham Loeb provides two revealing pieces of information. One would be October 29, the moment when it is closest to the sun. According to Abraham Loeb, it would be the ideal time to do a braking operation, because we often talk about sending a ship to another star and so on, traveling, keeping in mind that the ships have to be launched at high speed, but they also have to brake in some way.

And yes, Abraham Loeb speculates with the possibility that on October 29 that object uses a gravitational braking operation, in the same way that the Sun or a planet can do a gravitational assist and accelerate a ship that passes near it, it can also do the opposite, that is, slow down the speed of that ship. So on October 29 we will know if it is a ship or not and if it is coming towards us, because I speculated with the possibility that on October 29 it would do a braking operation and then head towards Earth, we will see.

But if so, it is not coming for us, that is, it is not coming for humanity, because this object, despite what they continue to say in some media, is not coming towards the solar system, it has been in the solar system for thousands of years, and this calculation is given by Abraham Loeb himself, at the speed at which it travels this object has been passing through the External solar system for about 8000 years, that is, if someone sent it it was not because of us.

Imagine that the previous information that you are 7,000 million years old was not correct, let's start speculating like Abraham Loeb and that it had been sent by an extraterrestrial civilization less time ago, 100,000, 200,000, a million years ago, for example, and it has been in the solar system crossing the solar system for 8,000 years. If it comes towards us, it is not because of humanity, because 8,000 years ago humans did not We gave signs of any type of civilization, or any type of activity, keep in mind that if we can be identified as a civilization it would be because of our powerful radio signals that we send to spaceships or we sometimes send messages such as the Arecibo message that was sent or that they had detected, in the style of the James Webb space telescope, gases resulting from industrial activities, pollution in other words.

When a space telescope located on another star could discover the Earth and analyze its atmosphere and detect gases resulting from the activity of a technological civilization, well approximately 4,000 years ago or so, which is when the activity of smelting metals on a large scale began, there we already began to contaminate the atmosphere a little, perhaps if they have the capacity, a fairly fine detector could detect it 4,000 years ago, however, this ship has been, as I said, 8,000 years traveling within the solar system.

The above completely rules out Abraham Loeb's speculation that it is a ship with hostile intentions, unfortunately no, it rules out that it is coming for us, but unfortunately it does not absolutely rule out AbiLoeb's speculation. Because? He raises it within the possibility of the dark forest theory. The theory of the dark forest, in summary, says that technological civilizations exist, but they are hidden, they do not want to be noticed and as soon as one discovers another, what they do is exterminate it and that is why they do not want to be noticed.

Abraham Loeb defends sending the Juno spacecraft to intercept the interstellar object, obviously, if the Juno spacecraft is sent it is because it is now orbiting Jupiter, it is because that object is going to pass relatively close to Jupiter, at 53.5 million kilometers, relatively close, but for me it is a unique opportunity.

If it is heading towards Jupiter, it is leaving the solar system and it is no longer an extraterrestrial ship or at least it is not a hostile extraterrestrial ship, at the moment it is behaving like a comet, but, even if it is a comet and we forget about the extraterrestrial ship and the hostility and all these things, even if it is an interstellar comet, if it is so old and interstellar, it could be very interesting to study it, for example, we know that the comets of the solar system contain many organic molecules essential for the emergence of life and in fact, many of them have had to come to Earth on comets because they could not have originated in the environment where the Earth is located.

So one of the questions that scientists have been asking for a long time is, do these molecules exist only in the solar system? or they could be something very common in the universe, if we could analyze that comet, that interstellar object and it had all those organic molecules or perhaps some other more spectacular ones, we would have very interesting clues about the origin of life.

Abraham Loeb proposes taking out Juno, which is studying the Jupiter system, and sending it to meet 3I/Atlas. Juno still has fuel to be able to do that maneuver. It would be something quite rushed and what we would have would be a pass close to the interstellar object. I couldn't orbit it, I wouldn't have that possibility, we would have some images and some analysis, but it's worth it.

And the issue has reached the United States Congress, Congresswoman Ana Paulina Luna has sent a letter to NASA to encourage them to study the feasibility of using the Juno probe to intercept this interstellar comet.
