Internet from the skies in case of emergency

Our current internet system is quite fragile, an earthquake, a hurricane, a fire that knocks down towers and cuts cables, any minimal event can leave entire cities without communication. Yes, there are satellites, but ground stations are still needed.

In the case of Sceye, a company from the United States, the goal is to bring connectivity where conventional networks simply do not reach, creating a true internet center that floats at 18,000 m altitude.

The secret to this flying internet hub is HS, a high-altitude platform system that functions like a telecommunications tower floating high above the clouds, in the stratosphere.

Equipped with powerful solar panels and ultra-high-density lithium sulfur batteries, this balloon is capable of staying in the air for months or even an entire year, staying in position with precision, even facing extreme winds 20 km above the ground.

Within this platform, advanced electronics, sensors and computers systems ensure that everything works in sync, monitoring the health of the structure, managing power and transmitting internet signals to dry land.

Sceye's HAPS is built with ultra-lightweight, but incredibly resistant materials, five times stronger in relation to gas-tight weight and capable of withstanding UV radiation and ozone from the stratosphere.

Its helium-filled structure keeps the balloon stable and positioned over the target area, even in adverse conditions, this means that unlike satellites that orbit the planet hundreds of kilometers away, this balloon can remain practically motionless covering the same region with a fast, low latency and reliable connection.

Sceye already has a contract with the giant Softbank to bring this concept to Japan in 2026, if an earthquake knocks down the cell towers, the HAPS goes up to restore communications and the objective, according to them, is to demonstrate that when everything fails on the ground, the sky will be the new way to keep people connected using 6G.
