The first vault of human microorganisms.

An underground vault has been created capable of protecting neither gold nor documents, but human bacteria. It sounds strange and it is, but this could be one of the biggest scientific bets to save the health of our species.

Inspired by the famous Norwegian seed bank, the doomsday vault, Swiss aims to preserve the most important microorganisms in the human intestine, an invisible treasure that could be crucial for the future of medicine, agriculture and even ecological stability officially called Microbiota Vault

This project was born in 2018 and has frozen more than 100 samples of feces and fermented foods from various countries. The plan is to reach 10,000 samples by 2029, all stored at -80º.

The mission is clear, to protect bacteria and microorganisms that make up the human microbiota and that are being eliminated by our own modern lifestyle, with processed food, excess antibiotics and environmental pollution.

These microbes control everything from digestion to the immune system and are rapidly disappearing. Each stored sample goes through a rigorous freezing and cataloging process. The infrastructure is designed to guarantee that even in the event of power failures, the contents remain safe.

Although current science does not yet allow us to restore damaged ecosystems or microbiomes with these samples alone, researchers believe that in the future this will be possible, the idea is to have biological support available to face future pandemics and chronic diseases or environmental collapses.
