This new advance promises to solve hydrogen's biggest obstacle, how to store it safely and efficiently under normal conditions. Scientists from EPFL in Switzerland and Kyoto University in Japan created the first deep autectic solvent based on hydride, a liquid that keeps hydrogen stable at room temperature.

The formula combines two simple compounds, ammonium borane and tetrabutylammonium boron hydride, separately these elements are solid, but together through hydrogen bonds that break their crystalline structures they remain in a liquid state, even when cooled below -50º.

This liquid contains 6.9% hydrogen by weight, exceeding the storage goal established by the United States Department of Energy for 2025, and most surprisingly, it releases pure hydrogen gas at only 60º, an extremely low temperature compared to current release methods in solids that require intense heating, in addition, the decomposition occurs only in ammonium borane, indicating that the other component can be reused, which could reduce costs and environmental impacts.

With this innovation, the use of hydrogen in cars, homes and industries becomes more viable than ever, the fuel of the future, which previously required complex and heavy technologies, can now be stored in a simple and light liquid, ready to release energy. This represents a leap not only in sustainable mobility, but also in sectors such as decentralized energy generation and portable storage systems.
