It begins, like almost everything else that matters and that destroys us today, with the thumb. A minimal, almost pre-conscious gesture. A trained spasm, the swipe of a digit across a glass surface that promises everything and delivers nothing but the next swipe. We call it "passing the time", as if time were a pauper to whom we throw the coins of our attention. But the truth is more raw. I hope this doesn't sound conspiratorial (because it isn't), but what is underway is a vast terraforming operation of the soul, a semi-unconscious psychological tapering called brain rot. And the term, although it seems like an ephemeral meme, is of frightening clinical precision. The uncomplicated thinking and compression that the Russian roulette of short videos has caused in our minds is far from having shown what it can cause in the long term
This essay is an attempt at an autopsy. An autopsy of the silence, of the depth, of the fertile boredom that has been replaced by an empty and vibrant anxiety. It is an analysis of degradation, not as a moral judgment, but as the observation of a fact, as undeniable as the gravity or certainty of death. The unconscious project (perhaps) of late capitalism, in its digital phase, has always been to cancel the future in order to sell us the present back, in installments. And short videos - this torrent of fifteen-second sketches, syncopated dances, empty revelations - are the apotheosis of this project. They are the minimum unit of a reality that doesn't accumulate, it just repeats itself. Each video is a beginning and an end in itself, a monad of stimuli that requires neither memory nor anticipation. The result is the creation of a perpetual present, a conveyor belt of insignificant novelties that prevents us from synthesizing time into any kind of coherent narrative.
The promise of the web was that of an expanded public space, a global agora. And it's not that it isn't that, but how many people decide to spend the evening looking at wikipedia? It's obvious that instagram, tiktok or youtube shorts are easier, you're tired, you're probably wiped out from your daily routine and you don't have any energy left to, I don't know, research the creation of penicillin or who the original people of Iceland were, you just want to rest and for some reason, maybe you think that the "mimimi, easy dopamine" of short videos is all you need. What we got, however, was the opposite: a myriad of private "spheres", self-generated bubbles of reality maintained by algorithms. Each of us now inhabits a private greenhouse, carefully acclimatized to reflect and amplify our own prejudices, desires and fears. The algorithm doesn't challenge us; it confirms us. It is the sycophantic echo that assures us that our little world is the world. This is the new form of domestication, an "anthropotechnique" that no longer aims to create the literate citizen of classical humanism, but the perfectly docile and reactive consumer.
In this sphere, the distinction between entertainment and life dissolves. Life becomes the act of performing for an invisible audience, and entertainment becomes the act of consuming other people's performances, in a psychic economy of mutual voyeurism and exhibitionism. It's a perfectly closed system, where the only thing that really circulates isn't ideas, but prefabricated affections: indignation, cuteness, schadenfreude, desire. And the currency of this economy is our attention, a finite resource that is being mined to the point of exhaustion. The inevitable consequence is the erosion of our ability to concentrate, and with it, our capacity for sustained critical thinking. How can you organize a resistance, articulate an alternative, or even imagine a different future, when your mind has been trained to operate in fifteen-second blocks?
We are creating a generation that may never know the experience of boredom, and therefore never feel the need to fill it with the resources of their own inner world. Or worse than that, a generation that tolerates stimulation to such an extent that the future that awaits them is one of incessant boredom, monstrous anhedonia, perhaps even a repulsion to anything less than what is obtained through the systems of immediate daily dependence. And if there are no stops, no breaks, no leisure, no reflective space, we will lose the ability to rationalize, to imagine... And imagination, the ability to create narratives, to entertain oneself with one's own thoughts - all this is born out of emptiness, silence. By giving our children an endless supply of distraction, we are in effect carrying out a preventive lobotomy of the soul. They learn to slide their finger before they learn to speak in full sentences; they learn to react, not to reflect.
At the other end, the elderly face a different threat. They are the foreigners in this new digital world. Having not grown up immersed in this language, they are immune to its subtlest seduction, but completely vulnerable to its most direct brutality. They don't fall into the vortex of brain rot, but into the raw clutches of fake news, phishing scams, WhatsApp chains that sow panic and paranoia. Their loneliness, the product of a society that marginalizes them, becomes their greatest vulnerability. The algorithm doesn't offer them dances or memes, but confirmations of their deepest fears. Their feed is a distorted mirror reflecting a world in collapse, full of enemies and conspiracies. The technology sold to them with the promise of connection only serves to deepen their isolation, locking them into spheres of misinformation and anger. It is a final and absurd cruelty: after a lifetime, they are reduced to nodes in a network they don't understand, their affections manipulated to generate engagement and profit, their fear monetized.
But it's not all hell, despite the drama I've built up in this text. The idea wasn't even to be so aggressive and immersive in this damn dystopia we live in. Because I do have hopes, and I always tend to look for solutions or clearer paths (when they exist), in the midst of this cacophony, a silent counter-move is beginning to form. It's the rebellion of slowness. Slow life. Platforms like Substack, long-form podcasts, the return to paper books - these are not merely nostalgic pastimes, but acts of political and existential insurgency. They are choices that demand an almost forgotten courage: the courage to be alone with one's thoughts, to face the anxiety of silence, to be bored. I confess that I find it difficult to break my tachymetric schedule and sit down to play a vinyl, tasting it, looking at the booklet and listening to the sound as an experience in itself, or when I go to bed with my cell phone in my hand, to open substack first and not instagram, my time for paper books is only after midnight, already in bed with the lamp on, but at least I try, every day. Occasionally I succeed, some of these things are slowly becoming a routine, yes. I insist that life is more than the sum of momentary stimuli, that depth exists and that it is worth the effort to reach it. I don't know if I am or will be able to create a cathedral of silence and reflection in the midst of digital chaos, but I do know that this is part of my discipline. And as Buddah or Kant would say: -Discipline is freedom.

E o termo, embora pareça um meme efêmero, é de uma precisão clínica assustadora. A descomplicação do raciocínio e a compressão que a roleta russa dos videos curtos tem causado em nossa mente está longe de ter mostrado o que pode causar a longo prazo
Este ensaio é uma tentativa de autópsia. Uma autópsia do silêncio, da profundidade, do tédio fértil que foi substituído por uma ansiedade vazia e vibrante. É uma análise da degradação, não como um julgamento moral, mas como a observação de um fato, tão inegável quanto a gravidade ou a certeza da morte. O projeto inconsciente (talvez) do capitalismo tardio, em sua fase digital, sempre foi o de cancelar o futuro para nos vender o presente de volta, em parcelas. E os vídeos curtos – essa torrente de esquetes de quinze segundos, de danças sincopadas, de revelações vazias – são a apoteose desse projeto. Eles são a unidade mínima de uma realidade que não se acumula, apenas se repete. Cada vídeo é um começo e um fim em si mesmo, uma mônada de estímulo que não exige memória nem antecipação. O resultado é a criação de um presente perpétuo, uma esteira rolante de novidades insignificantes que nos impede de sintetizar o tempo em qualquer tipo de narrativa coerente.
A promessa da rede era a de um espaço público expandido, uma ágora global. E não é que não seja isso, mas quantas pessoas decidem passar a noite dando uma olhada no wikipedia? É óbvio que o instagram, o tiktok ou os shorts do youtube são mais fáceis, você está cansado, está provavelmente destruído da sua rotina diária e não te sobra energia para sei lá, pesquisar à respeito da criação da penicilina ou quem foi o povo originário da islândia, você só quer descansar e por algum motivo, talvez ache que a "mimimi, dopamina fácil" dos videos curtos é tudo que lhe serve. O que recebemos, no entanto, foi o oposto: uma miríade de "esferas" privadas, bolhas de realidade autogeradas e mantidas por algoritmos. Cada um de nós habita agora uma estufa particular, cuidadosamente climatizada para refletir e amplificar nossos próprios preconceitos, desejos e medos. O algoritmo não nos desafia; ele nos confirma. Ele é o eco bajulador que nos assegura de que o nosso pequeno mundo é o mundo. Essa é a nova forma de domesticação, uma "antropotécnica" que não visa mais criar o cidadão letrado do humanismo clássico, mas o consumidor perfeitamente dócil e reativo.
Nessa esfera, a distinção entre o entretenimento e a vida se dissolve. A vida se torna o ato de performar para uma audiência invisível, e o entretenimento se torna o ato de consumir as performances alheias, numa economia psíquica de voyeurismo e exibicionismo mútuos. É um sistema perfeitamente fechado, onde a única coisa que realmente circula não são ideias, mas afetos pré-fabricados: a indignação, a fofura, o schadenfreude, o desejo. E a moeda corrente dessa economia é a nossa atenção, um recurso finito que está sendo minerado até a exaustão. A consequência inevitável é a erosão da nossa capacidade de concentração, e com ela, a capacidade de pensamento crítico sustentado. Como se pode organizar uma resistência, articular uma alternativa, ou sequer imaginar um futuro diferente, quando a mente foi treinada para operar em blocos de quinze segundos?
Estamos criando uma geração que talvez nunca conheça a experiência do tédio, e, portanto, nunca sinta a necessidade de preenchê-lo com os recursos do seu próprio mundo interior. Ou pior que isso, que gera tolerância ao estímulo a ponto de que o futuro que as aguarda é de um tédio incessante, uma anedonia monstra, quem sabe até mesmo de uma repulsa a tudo que seja menos do que se obtém através dos sistemas de dependência imediatas diárias. E se não há paragens, se não há pausas, ócio, espaço reflexivo, nós perderemos a capacidade de racionalizar, de imaginar... E a imaginação, a capacidade de criar narrativas, de se entreter com os próprios pensamentos – tudo isso nasce do vazio, do silêncio. Ao entregarmos às nossas crianças um suprimento infinito de distração, estamos, na prática, realizando uma lobotomia preventiva da alma. Elas aprendem a deslizar o dedo antes de aprenderem a falar frases completas; aprendem a reagir, não a refletir.
Na outra ponta, os idosos enfrentam uma ameaça diferente. Eles são os estrangeiros nesse novo mundo digital. Não tendo crescido imersos nessa linguagem, eles são imunes à sua sedução mais sutil, mas completamente vulneráveis à sua brutalidade mais direta. Eles não caem no vórtice do brain rot, mas nas garras cruas das fake news, dos golpes de phishing, das correntes de WhatsApp que semeiam o pânico e a paranoia. A sua solidão, produto de uma sociedade que os marginaliza, torna-se a sua maior vulnerabilidade. O algoritmo não lhes oferece danças ou memes, mas confirmações de seus medos mais profundos. O feed deles é um espelho distorcido que reflete um mundo em colapso, cheio de inimigos e conspirações. A tecnologia, que lhes foi vendida com a promessa de conexão, serve apenas para aprofundar seu isolamento, trancando-os em esferas de desinformação e raiva. É uma crueldade final e absurda: depois de uma vida inteira, são reduzidos a nós de uma rede que não compreendem, seus afetos manipulados para gerar engajamento e lucro, seu medo monetizado.
Mas nem tudo é o inferno, apesar do drama que construí nesse texto. A ideia nem era ser tão agressivo e imersivo nessa maldita distopia que vivemos. Por que eu tenho sim esperanças, e sempre tendo a observar soluções ou caminhos mais límpidos (quando estes existem), em meio a essa cacofonia, uma contramão silenciosa começa a se formar. É a rebelião da lentidão. Do Slow life. Plataformas como o Substack, os podcasts de longa duração, o retorno aos livros de papel – não são meros passatempos nostálgicos, mas atos de insurgência política e existencial. São escolhas que exigem uma coragem quase esquecida: a coragem de ficar só com os próprios pensamentos, de enfrentar a ansiedade do silêncio, de se entediar. Confesso que tenho dificuldade em romper o meu cronograma taquiritmico e sentar para colocar um vinil para tocar, degustando-o, vendo o encarte e ouvindo o som como uma experiência em si, ou em ao deitar com o celular na mão, abrir primeiro o substack e não o instagram, meu horário de livros de papel é só depois da meia noite, já na cama com a luz do abajur, mas ao menos eu tento, todo dia. Ocasionalmente eu consigo, algumas dessas coisas estão se tornando lentamente uma rotina sim. Insisto que a vida é mais do que a soma de estímulos momentâneos, que a profundidade existe e que vale a pena o esforço de alcançá-la. Não sei se sou ou serei capaz de criar uma catedral de silêncio e reflexão no meio do caos digital, mas eu sei que isso é parte de minha disciplina. E como diria Buddah ou Kant: -Disciplina é liberdade.
