Everyone is tired of some of Freud's dated nonsense, especially when it clashes with concepts that have been updated and rethought in our modern world. But there's no denying the power of Psychoanalysis over the lukewarm and sometimes flaccid qualities of traditional Psychology (which is being saved by Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral). Freud had the potential to be very erudite in his studies and to wander through countless areas in depth, very different from the fragility of other strands or even the complex hermeticism of his former student, Jung. Many people get caught up in the drama of the "phallus" that Freud ended up gaining as his apex of popularity (good or bad), but he had some very interesting concepts and more than that, he had students who became his successors, extremely important for the evolution of psychoanalysis, and it's about them that I'm going to talk about in this series, but first I want to give you a brief overview of some fantastic topics about Freud that are less talked about due to sheer popular ignorance.
SourceUnconscious
The unconscious is popular, I know, after all it is one of the main pillars of Freud's psychoanalytic theory, representing the part of the mind that contains repressed desires, memories and impulses that are not directly accessible to consciousness. But this ends up falling by the wayside in times of science where there is supposedly no proof that we actually have a system that we can call the unconscious, something I disagree with. Freud argued that the unconscious is made up of traumatic experiences, unacceptable thoughts and primitive desires, which are kept out of consciousness by defense mechanisms such as repression. Supposedly, these repressed contents significantly influence our behaviors, thoughts and emotions. They manifest themselves in disguised forms, such as dreams, failed acts and neurotic symptoms. Given the way man acts and lives, it's unlikely that this isn't real; in some people, the "density" of the unconscious is palpable. As for the method he developed for treating the unconscious (free associations), I don't really understand it yet and I don't know if it works properly.
SourceEros and Thanatos (Life and Death Drives)
Freud postulated that the human psyche is driven by two fundamental forces: Eros (the life drive) and Thanatos (the death drive). Of course, he used fancy Greek names for this. Eros is the energy that promotes survival, reproduction, growth and the creation of social bonds. It is motivated by the pleasure principle and seeks the preservation of life and the perpetuation of the species, manifesting itself in loving, altruistic and creative behavior. In short, what keeps us alive and well, thriving, is the instinct to survive and prosper. On the other hand, Thanatos represents the destructive and aggressive drive, a tendency inherent in human beings to return to the inorganic state, to nothingness. This manifests itself in self-destructive behavior, violence, war and the unconscious search for states of absolute tranquility, such as deep sleep or death. The death drive fascinates me a lot and I want to study it in more depth. It will probably be my first more complete topic here, in the next post. For Freud, these two forces are in constant tension within the individual, shaping their actions and internal conflicts.
SourceOedipus complex
The Oedipus Complex is a fundamental theory of Freud's and completely scandalizing to society (like so many), but it is undeniably well constructed and most likely correct. It describes a child's unconscious desire for the parent of the opposite sex (here's an example of Freud's dated content, which we'll talk about in another post) and the consequent feeling of rivalry with the parent of the same sex. This concept is central to the phallic stage of psychosexual development, which occurs between the ages of 3 and 6. Freud suggests that, at this stage, boys develop a strong attachment to their mother and see their father as a competitor for her affection, while girls would have similar feelings towards their father, but in a more complex way, according to the Freudian model. This dynamic generates anxiety, leading to the internalization of the authority of the rival parent and the development of the superego, which is the part of the mind responsible for morality and social values. It's a thorny subject, and I'll need time and organization to tackle it with quality.
Well, I hope (after finishing these Freud topics) to talk about the three main post-Freud names who advanced psychoanalysis: Jung, Klein and Lacan (and maybe a few others later), each of whom deserves weeks of posts, given their rich and complex content. Todo mundo está cansado de algumas baboseiras datadas de Freud, principalmente quando colidem com conceitos atualizados e re-pensados no nosso mundo moderno. Mas é inegável a potência da Psicanálise em detrimento as qualidades mornas e as vezes flácidas da Psicologia tradicional (que está sendo salva pela Cognitiva Comportamental e pela Dialética Comportamental), Freud tinha um potencial de ser muito erudito nos seus estudos e de vagar por inúmeras áreas profundamente, muito diferente da fragilidade de outras vertentes ou mesmo do hermetismo complexo de seu ex-aluno, Jung. Muita gente prende-se ao drama do "falo" que Freud acabou ganhando como seu ápice de popularidade (boa ou ruim), mas ele possui conceitos muito interessantes e mais que isso, possui alunos que viraram seus sucessores, extremamente importantes para a evolução da psicanálise, e é sobre eles que irei falar nessa série, mas antes quero dar uma pequena discorrida sobre tópicos fantásticos de Freud que são menos visados por puro desconhecimento popular.
SourceInconsciente
O inconsciente é sim popular, eu sei, afinal é um dos principais pilares da teoria psicanalítica de Freud, representando a parte da mente que contém desejos, memórias e impulsos reprimidos que não são acessíveis diretamente à consciência. Mas isso acaba ficando um pouco de lado em tempos de ciência onde supostamente não existem provas de que possuímos de fato um sistema que podemos chamar de inconsciente. Coisa que discordo.
Freud argumentava que o inconsciente é formado por experiências traumáticas, pensamentos inaceitáveis e desejos primitivos, que são mantidos fora da consciência por mecanismos de defesa como repressão. Supostamente, esses conteúdos reprimidos influenciam de maneira significativa nossos comportamentos, pensamentos e emoções. Eles se manifestam de forma disfarçada, como em sonhos, atos falhos e sintomas neuróticos. Dado o modo como o homem age e vive, é improvável que isso não seja real, em algumas pessoas a "densidade" do inconsciente chega a ser palpável. Já o método desenvolvido por ele para o tratamento do inconsciente (as livres associações, eu não compreendo bem ainda e não sei se funcionam direito).
SourceEros e Tanatos (Pulsões de Vida e Morte)
Freud postulou que a psique humana é impulsionada por duas forças fundamentais: Eros (a pulsão de vida) e Tanatos (a pulsão de morte). Óbvio que usou nomes chiques gregos para isso. Eros é a energia que promove a sobrevivência, a reprodução, o crescimento e a criação de laços sociais. Ele é motivado pelo princípio do prazer e busca a preservação da vida e a perpetuação da espécie, manifestando-se em comportamentos amorosos, altruístas e criativos. Em suma, o que nos mantém vivos e bem, prosperando, é o instinto de sobreviver e prosperar.
Por outro lado, Tanatos representa a pulsão destrutiva e agressiva, uma tendência inerente ao ser humano de retornar ao estado inorgânico, ao nada. Isso se manifesta em comportamentos autodestrutivos, violência, guerra e a busca inconsciente por estados de tranquilidade absoluta, como o sono profundo ou a morte. A pulsão da morte me fascina muito e eu quero estuda-la mais a fundo, provavelmente será ela o meu primeiro tema mais completo por aqui, na próxima postagem. Para Freud, essas duas forças estão em constante tensão dentro do indivíduo, moldando suas ações e conflitos internos.
SourceComplexo de Édipo
O Complexo de Édipo é uma teoria fundamental de Freud e completamente escandalizadora da sociedade (tal como tantas), mas que é inegavelmente bem construída e muito provavelmente correta. Ela descreve o desejo inconsciente de uma criança pelo genitor do sexo oposto (aqui um exemplo do conteúdo datado de Freud, que falaremos em outra postagem) e o consequente sentimento de rivalidade com o genitor do mesmo sexo. Este conceito é central na fase fálica do desenvolvimento psicosexual, que ocorre entre os 3 e 6 anos de idade. Freud sugere que, nesse estágio, meninos desenvolvem um forte apego pela mãe e veem o pai como um concorrente pelo afeto dela, ao passo que as meninas teriam sentimentos semelhantes em relação ao pai, mas de forma mais complexa, segundo o modelo freudiano. Essa dinâmica gera ansiedade, levando à internalização da autoridade do genitor rival e ao desenvolvimento do superego, que é a parte da mente responsável pela moralidade e pelos valores sociais. Tema espinhoso pra caramba, precisarei de tempo e organização para aborda-lo com qualidade.
