Despite coming late in his construction of the psychoanalytic framework, drives are one of the main pillars of the original psychoanalysis, and many quality psychoanalysts would place it as Freud's greatest contribution to psychoanalysis. In fact, he added a great deal to the understanding of the human being, whether at clinical and complex levels or in everyday examples from birth to death.
SourceIt is essential to first understand what Freud means by "drive" (from the German Trieb). In his work The Instincts and Their Vicissitudes (1915), Freud defines the drive as a concept that straddles the boundary between the psychic and the somatic, a driving force that leads the individual to seek organic and psychic satisfaction, a mechanism inherent to his system. Freud constructed a scheme in which the drive is characterized by four main elements: Source, Pressure, Object and Goal. But let's take it easy, the subject is dense and can get confusing, so let's break down each of these items to make their concepts more palatable. The body, this biological heap full of basic and instinctive needs, is the origin of pulsional energy, in other words, the source, what it asks for, what it unconsciously desires. We could describe it as a state of physical/psychic excitement or tension, usually linked to a basic need in either of these two areas. But let's not get complicated, we're talking about hunger, thirst, sexual desire, basic things really. In other words, the drive is always organic, but mediated by the psyche. If you've ever tried prolonged fasting or celibacy, you know the internal struggle between body and mind.
We then have pressure, the strength of the drive, the intensity with which it will act on the psyche to achieve satisfaction. In other words, the amount of energy that the desire carries, the more energy, the more inevitable the experience that is to come, and this energy doesn't cease until either the desire is fulfilled or at least the body manages to deceive itself through parallel mechanisms, such as the symbolic realization of the act and sublimations of the original action. The sexual drive is a classic example of how it can ruin the mind of a person who can't get rid of a continuous desire until it is fulfilled. And obviously, there are countless layers of psychological pathologies here, stemming from the repression of sexual impulses, an inconvenient truth that is still taboo today.
The object of the drive is the target, it's where desire wants to go, it's the thing that hypnotizes it. This object can be concrete (a person, food) or abstract (an idea, a fantasy). The object is always variable, both for each individual and for the same individual at different times in their life, the target of their desire follows the construction and evolution of their persona, but often it can be an object in only partial transformation, changing in terms of details or fantasies, but not in its core, in its roots. There is also the concept of the partial object, the desire doesn't have to be a person, it can just be that person's foot (in the case of fetish - podolatry), or even the symbolism of what that person means (think of gurus for example).
SourceUntil we reach the goal of the drive, which is the reduction of the tension generated by bodily excitation, jouissance (not the physiological, the literal, but the psychic). Freud describes the "goal" as a moment of relief and relaxation where desire has been fulfilled and the body rests in homeostasis. This ends the cycle of the pleasure principle, the automatic system of the psyche that mediates the biological impulse, maximizing pleasure and minimizing suffering. Obviously, it's not all flowers and perhaps the goals are rarely achieved, whether due to social norms or ego defense mechanisms, full satisfaction is often an oasis. That leaves incomplete or symbolic satisfaction, sublimated, transmuted or even repressed. As it happens, repressed desire is what governs our society and it's in the air, you can smell it. It's not uncommon for repressions to be related to the vast majority of violent, negative and perverse behavior in our society; these repressions and desires almost always appear in dreams, often with great frequency, but in such a way that the person themselves fails to make an impact because they don't appreciate the internal signs.
Obviously the four elements of this mechanism are interconnected and operate together, often overlapping or even compensating for each other in power due to some state of failure (an unrealized goal increases the pressure and diversifies the object perhaps?). And then there's the limitation caused by our ego defense mechanisms, which serve as a kind of internal watchdog, as well as the social conventions that are built on the morals common to society as a whole. So satisfying our drives is often a real challenge, yet this system is constant, inexhaustible. Even after it has been satiated, achieved, the drive reorganizes itself and seeks new variations and expressions of desire. Now, in addition to this basic overview, it's important to note that Freud proposed a drive duality, the libido drives and the ego's self-preservation drives, which he later converted into his final theory, that of Eros and Thanatos.
Eros, the drive for life, the creator of bonds, of unity, the builder. This drive encompasses not only sexuality, but also the instincts of self-preservation and, at more advanced levels, the complexification of life in order to maintain it. In The Ego and the Id (1923), Freud describes Eros as the energy that promotes the connection between cells, individuals and communities, with a view to survival and reproduction. Therefore, in a more comprehensive and less reductionist view, libido (which was initially seen as sexual energy) becomes the psychic energy of life, the drive of Eros, which can be directed both externally and internally, but always "pro-existence", promoting growth, integration and expansion.

Freud noticed this tendency towards dissolution and disintegration, a kind of return to the inorganic. And perhaps, the human being has a drive to return to non-existence in contrast to his tendency to intensify and be vigorous, the paradox of Eros and Thanatos. The god of death, in the Freudian view as a drive, is silent and destructive and works in opposition to Eros. Thanatos is expressed in the most varied actions, such as: aggression directed outwards and veiled self-destruction in infinite ways. This dynamic, the dance of chaos between the two "symbolic entities" could explain practically everything that happens all the time everywhere on this planet, if we look at it through the systematic eyes of Freudian psychoanalysis. Much of this is expressed in Freud's 1930 work "Civilization's Malaise". The repelling of the death drive by Eros causes the individual to act in a state of hetero-violence, whether in minor terms such as verbal violence, psychological violence or even physical outbursts ranging from the most banal slap to murder and genocide. Society's malaise is caused precisely by this vertiginous constant struggle between the two drives of all human beings at the same time.
Clinically speaking, many psychopathologies have veins in poorly resolved life and death drives, especially when they are repressed or inhibited. Issues such as suicide and self-injury are very complex and would require an article on their own, so I'll avoid simplifying them here, but the relationship with the exacerbated death drive in this type of situation is naturally clear. The Freudian clinic has been expanded a great deal since she wrote it, for example Melanie Klein complexified the concept of Thanatos by showing it to be present in the early stages of child development, while Lacan has another interpretation of the drives (which will have its own article to be analyzed). Although psychoanalysis struggles with judgments that it is a pseudo-science at certain points, Freud's theory of drives is simply fantastic and I doubt that anything clearer and sharper than that will ever emerge.

Apesar de ter vindo tardiamente em sua construção do arcabouço psicanalítico, as pulsões são um dos principais pilares da psicanálise original, muitos psicanalistas de qualidade colocariam-na como a maior contribuição de Freud para a psicanálise. De fato muito acrescentou na compreensão do ser humano, seja em níveis clínicos e complexos ou seja em exemplos cotidianos desde o nascer até o morrer.
SourceÉ essencial compreender antes de mais nada o que Freud entende por "pulsão" (do alemão Trieb). Em sua obra Os Instintos e suas Vicissitudes (1915), Freud define a pulsão como um conceito limítrofe entre o psíquico e o somático, uma força motriz impulsionadora que leva o indivíduo a buscar satisfação orgânica e psiquica, um mecanismo inerente ao seu sistema. Freud construiu um esquema onde a pulsão é caracterizada com quatro elementos principais: Fonte, Pressão, Objeto e Meta. Mas vamos com calma, o assunto é denso e pode ficar confuso, vamos destrinchar cada um desses itens para tornar mais palatáveis seus conceitos. O corpo, esse amontoado biológico cheio de necessidades básicas e instintivas é a origem da energia pulsional, ou seja a fonte, aquilo que pede, que deseja inconscientemente. Poderíamos descrever como um estado de excitação ou tensão física/psíquica, normalmente está ligada a uma necessidade básica de qualquer uma dessas duas áreas. Mas não compliquemos, estamos falando de fome, sede, desejo sexual, coisas básicas mesmo. Em outras palavras, a pulsão é sempre orgânica, mas mediada pelo psíquico. Se você já testou um jejum prolongado, um celibato, sabe bem como é a luta interna entre o corpo e a mente.
Temos então a pressão, a força da pulsão, a intensidade com qual ela agirá sobre a psique para alcançar a satisfação. Em outras palavras, a quantidade de energia que o desejo carrega, quanto mais energia, mas inevitável será a experiência que está por vir, e tal energia não cessa até que ou o desejo seja realizado ou ao menos consiga-se enganar o corpo através de mecanismos paralelos, como a realização simbólica do ato e sublimações da ação original.
A pulsão sexual é um exemplo clássico de como pode arruinar a mente de uma pessoa que não consegue se desvencilhar de um desejo contínuo até que o realize. E obviamente, aqui encontram-se inúmeras camadas de patologias psicológicas, advindas da repressão dos impulsões sexuais, uma verdade inconveniente que ainda hoje é tabu.
O objeto da pulsão é o alvo, é aonde o desejo quer chegar, é a coisa que lhe hipnotiza. Esse objeto pode ser concreto (uma pessoa, um alimento) ou abstrato (uma ideia, uma fantasia). O objeto é sempre variável, tanto para cada indivíduo como para o mesmo indivíduo em diferentes momentos da vida, o alvo de seu desejo segue a construção e evolução da sua persona, mas muitas vezes ele pode ser um objeto em transformação apenas parcial, mudando em termos de detalhes ou fantasias, mas não em seu núcleo, em suas raízes. Existe também o conceito do objeto parcial, o desejo não precisa ser uma pessoa, pode ser apenas o pé dessa pessoa (no caso de fetiche - a podolatria), ou mesmo o simbolismo do que aquela pessoa significa (pensemos nos gurus por exemplo).
SourceAté que então chega-se na meta da pulsão, que é a redução da tensão gerada pela excitação corporal, o gozo (não o fisiológico, o literal, mas o psíquico). Freud descreve a "meta" como um momento de alívio e relaxamento onde o desejo foi realizado e o corpo descansa em homeostase. Dessa forma finaliza-se o ciclo do princípio do prazer, o sistema automático da psique que media o impulso biológico, maximizando o prazer e minimizando o sofrimento. Obviamente que nem tudo são flores e talvez raramente as metas sejam alcançadas, seja por normas sociais ou mecanismos de defesa do ego, a satisfação plena é um oásis muitas vezes. Aí resta a satisfação incompleta ou simbólica, sublimada, transmutada ou reprimida mesmo. Por acaso o desejo reprimido é o que rege nossa sociedade e isso está no ar, da pra sentir até o cheiro. Não raro as repressões estão relacionadas como a grande maioria dos comportamentos violentos, negativos, perversos de nossa sociedade; Quase sempre tais repressões e desejos aparecem nos sonhos, muitas vezes com uma grande frequência, mas de forma que a própria pessoa deixa de impactar-se por não dar valor aos sinais internos.
Obviamente os quatro elementos desse mecanismo estão interligados e operam em conjunto, muitas vezes se sobrepondo ou mesmo se compensando em potência devido a algum estado de falha (uma meta não realizada aumenta a pressão e diversifica o objeto talvez?). E além disso temos toda a limitação causada por nossos mecanismos de defesa do ego que servem como uma espécie de vigia interno, além das convenções sociais que são construídas a partir da moral comum a toda a sociedade. Logo, satisfazer as pulsões é um verdadeiro desafio muitas vezes, ainda assim, esse sistema é constante, inesgotável. Mesmo após saciada, alcançada, a pulsão se reorganiza e busca novas variações e expressões do desejo. Agora, além desse panorama básico, é importante salientar que Freud propôs uma dualidade pulsional, as pulsões da libido e as pulsões de auto conservação do ego, o que mais tarde ele veio converter na sua teoria final, a de Eros e Thanatos.
Eros, a pulsão de vida, a criadora de vínculos, de união, a construtora. Essa pulsão engloba não apenas a sexualidade, mas também os instintos de auto conservação e também em patamares mais avançados, a complexificação da vida em prol da manutenção da mesma. Em O Ego e o Id (1923), Freud descreve Eros como a energia que promove a ligação entre as células, os indivíduos e as comunidades, visando à sobrevivência e à reprodução. Logo, num olhar mais abrangente e menos reducionista, a libido (que inicialmente era vista como energia sexual) passa a ser a energia psíquica da vida, a pulsão de Eros, que pode direcionar-se tanto para o externo quanto para o interno, mas sempre "pró-existência", promovendo o crescimento, a integração e a expansão.

Freud percebeu essa tendência a dissolução e a desintegração, uma espécie de retorno ao inorgânico. E talvez, o ser humano tenha uma pulsão de voltar a não-existência em contraparte com a sua tendência em intensificar-se e ser vigoroso, o paradoxo de Eros e Thanatos. O deus da morte, na visão Freudiana como uma pulsão é silenciosa e destrutiva e trabalha em oposição a Eros. Thanatos está expresso em ações das mais variadas, como: agressões dirigidas ao exterior e autodestruição velada de infinitas formas. Essa dinâmica, a dança do caos entre as duas "entidades simbólicas" poderia ser explicação para praticamente tudo que acontece o tempo todo em todo lugar desse planeta, se observarmos pelo olhar sistemático da psicanálise Freudiana. Muito disso está expresso no "Mal-Estar da Civilização", obra de 1930 de Freud. A repelência da pulsão de morte dada por Eros coloca o indivíduo a agir em um estado de hetero-violência, seja em termos menores como a violência verbal, psicológica ou mesmo em estados de rompantes físicos que vão do mais banal tapa até o homicídio e o genocídio. O mal estar da sociedade se dá exatamente por essa vertiginosa luta constante das duas pulsões de todos os seres humanos ao mesmo tempo.
Clinicamente falando, muitas das psicopatologias tem veias nas pulsões de vida e morte mal resolvidas, principalmente quando repreendidas, inibidas. Assuntos como o suicídio e auto-agressão são muito complexos e precisariam de um artigo só para eles então evitarei de deixa-los simplificados aqui, mas fica naturalmente clara a relação com a pulsão de morte exacerbada nesse tipo de situação. A clínica Freudiana foi expandida muito desde sua escrita, por exemplo Melanie Klein complexificou o conceito de Thanatos ao mostra-lo como presente já nos primeiros estágios do desenvolvimento infantil, já Lacan tem uma outra interpretação das pulsões (que terá um artigo próprio para ser analisada). Ainda que a psicanálise lute com julgamentos de tratar-se de uma pseudociência em determinados pontos, a teoria das pulsões de Freud é simplesmente fantástica e eu duvido que surja algo mais claro e nítido que isso.
