Since I was a child I have been fascinated by animals, the bonds that they form with us have deeply attracted my attention.
From my first pet I learned a lot about how they can let go of past traumas, change from surly to docile and stop being fearful.
Her name is Lorenza, she is a parrot; I don't know exactly how old she is, I know that when she was eight years old I saw her locked in a small cage; It belonged to my maternal grandmother. Something I value a lot is the freedom of animals, I think that like us, they enjoy walking from one place to another, without barriers. However, I think that out of ignorance they had it as another decoration in the house, I do not judge my grandmother for that, perhaps she did not see the matter as I did.
One morning when we were returning from such a wonderful trip, at Grandma Ana's house, it occurred to me to ask her for that beautiful green bird. Without putting a single but, she told me yes! We started the journey back to our home with a new member of the family, Lorenza!
To my surprise, she didn't protest and she didn't object when I took her with me. When I got home it occurred to me to leave it in a cardboard box while my dad made a decent house for it.
Lorenza was very fearful of men, she hated them, if she saw my dad 2 meters away she would start screaming in fear; I suspected that some man had done her some evil. Because she is missing the lower beak and part of the upper one. Much was said about the matter, such as that it was a fungus that had consumed its beak or that from so much trying to escape from that "jail" it had fallen off, I insisted that there was something else, due to its way of being, scary and always protecting yourself from something
Days and weeks passed, and my father, as a good lover of animals, began his process of "taming" Lorenza; providing small incentives and prizes, such as butter (she loves butter because it is soft), shows of care and affection; Until Lorenza finally gave in to such displays of love, she totally changed, she went from being aggressive and fearful to being affectionate, her favorite person is undoubtedly my dad.
We never lock her in a cage, she lives free in a large patio, she has a little house, where other birds visit her.
If you wonder why we didn't decide to give her freedom and release her, the answer is obvious, she couldn't survive with that disability, she can't eat food like other birds. But don't doubt that Lorenza is very happy in her home and with my family.
I do not recommend anyone to take birds to lock them up, but there are animals with disabilities that can still live in peace and we can give them a decent life; Not all animals with disabilities must be euthanized, we can find solutions. In our case, we are looking for a food that will adapt to Lorenza's beak, since it cannot eat seeds, we make porridge for it.
I hope you liked my story, about my Lorenza. Until a next post of my other pets.
