Hey Hive Pet community today I want to tell you how I went from being a discouraged student in pandemic with no responsibilities but herself, to being the Karen responsible for a cute kitty during the pandemic.

The pandemic affected all of us in different ways and in the same way it left us with new lessons and good experiences. In my case it was my cats. Before the pandemic started, I had been living with an aunt for some time, where I was not only independent in terms of time, I also had to be responsible and take care of my self-care (eating, washing, cleaning, among others); when the pandemic started, in march 2020, I was still living with this aunt and the first months, although we had to get used to a new reality and routine, we were able to continue with our lives relatively normally. However, in the middle of the first year of the pandemic, for personal reasons beyond my control, I had to move back home with my parents and brother, which meant that I had to adapt to a new situation and many changes in the routine to which I was already accustomed. The latter, plus the fact of not being able to lead my life as I normally did (going out, living with my friends, going to my university, among others) made me get discouraged, my mood was down and well you can imagine, but what I didn't expect is that my situation would change in February 2021 with the arrival of my first kitten, Kenji.

Approximately the third week of February 2021 I decided to leave my house to something I don't remember anymore, when I went up the stairs that lead me to the street, my parents were at the door and right at their feet was a cute kitten rubbing against their legs. My mom isn't a pet person and cats are not her favorite animals, so she tried to get the cat to leave, but no, he stayed there and when I finished climbing the stairs, as soon as he saw me with his cute little face he came closer and started rubbing himself to leave me his little smell and insisted that I make love to him. Since we saw the tomos kitten we realized that he was still in his puppy stage and that he was a cat that lived at home because he had a shiny coat, looked quite well cared for and was chubby; another thing we could notice is that he was having a hard time in the street because the other cats and bigger dogs, that live in my street, would corner him and end up scratching and hitting him. After so much insistence, my mom let me put him some food and that's how Kenji lasted a whole week going to my house to look for food.

I had never been so committed to an animal, not that I had ever been allowed to have so many pets before, but Kenji made me feel the need to take care of him and protect him; during those days he would always come home to eat and then sit with me on the stairs, as if he understood my discouragement. For a week or more, I was trying to find an adopter for him, but nobody wanted such a big cat, besides, because of his behavior we thought he was a female, so they didn't want him anymore. After two weeks in which I insisted a lot to my parents and with the help of a cousin, we managed to get them to accept the cat, but there were conditions, not only I had to be responsible for his food, water and needs because yes, cats need a lot of attention and care (I even dare to say that they need more of this than a dog), at first Kenji could only enter the house to eat, so I had to make sure that he wouldn't enter at any other time and that when he came to eat he wouldn't break anything at all.

I'm sure you're wondering where he slept, because before entering my house there's a hallway, right there we put him a little box, which he loved, with many pieces of cloth and so, although he spent most of the day at home lying on a giant pillow and warm in the living room or playing with his balls and ropes, he slept outside warm in his box, without fear of getting wet if it rained or other animals attacking him and with the possibility of being able to go to do his needs wherever he felt like. Little by little Kenji gained the affection of my parents and my brother, who didn't want a pet either, and after fighting every night not to leave the house and meowing like an ambulance siren every morning to go in to eat, go to bed and play, one day my parents let him sleep inside the house, a small mistake because he made a big mess, since he had to do his needs and had no soil or sand to do it, and the next morning we had a lot of cleaning to do and of course we had to solve the emergency of his sandbox. Soon after, thanks to a friend of my mom's we found out that Kenji was a male and that was also a big help for my parents to accept him.

Although at the beginning it was a constant struggle, since we couldn't let him in the rooms because he would climb on the beds, scratch most of the furniture, want to eat everything he could find, didn't like to wait for food and many other things, it was also a lot of fun to teach him to change those kinds of behaviors. It made me feel much better to sit and cuddle him or go out in the living room to play with him and his yellow ball or a little rope he loved to chase. Kenji not only turned me into a responsible Karen who now loves to spend time with her cats (I have two, but I will tell you about my other cat in another post) and who learned to understand and value cats as pets, because contrary to what we usually believe, cats are not independent and hateful, they're very affectionate animals that need constant attention, care and love from us. It also helped me to overcome the pandemic period that, although for some people it was great, for others it was not so great.

Kenji is a very territorial cat, that's why he ended up scaring away almost all the cats (males) that roamed around my house and sometimes he also fought with the cats that got into his territory, so much so that all the neighbors already know who he is and one of my neighbors says that he is Mr. Cat and that my smallest cat, Tigre, is his gang. However, despite being very surly, he's also a cat who knows how to win people's affection because he has a nice fur and has a tender side, so little by little he has not only opened the doors of my neighbors' hearts, but also the doors of their houses because they all give him food.

To finish, I remind you, adopt NOT buy, let's give a home to those little ones who need it so much and stop supporting animal breeders where these animals remain in captivity and in deplorable conditions. Let's support by sharing or donating to spay/neuter campaigns, to reduce the reproduction of animals on the street, and helping the shelters that give these little ones a roof over their heads. Hola comunidad de Hive Pet hoy quiero contarles como pase de ser una estudiante desanimada en pandemia y sin responsabilidades más que ella misma, a ser la Karen responsable de un lindo gatito durante la pandemia.

A toda la pandemia nos afectó de diferente manera y de igual forma nos dejó nuevas enseñanzas y buenas experiencias. En mi caso fueron mis gatos. Antes de que comenzará la pandemia llevaba un tiempo viviendo con una tía, allí no solo era independiente en cuanto a tiempo, también debía ser responsable y estar pendiente de mi auto-cuidado (comer, lavar, limpiar, entre otros); cuando comenzó la pandemia, en marzo del 2020, aún vivía con esta tía y los primeros meses, aunque tuvimos que acostumbrarnos a una nueva realidad y rutina, pudimos continuar con nuestras vidas relativamente normal. Sin embargo, a mitad del primer año de pandemia, por motivos personales y ajenos a mi voluntad, tuve que mudarme y devolverme a casa con mis padres y hermano, esto implico que tuve que adaptarme a una nueva situación y muchos cambios en la rutina a la que ya estaba acostumbrada. Esto último, más el hecho de no poder llevar mi vida como normalmente lo hacía (salir, convivir con mis amigos, ir a mi universidad, entre otros) hizo que me desanimará bastante, mi ánimo se fue abajo y bueno ya se pueden imaginar, pero lo que yo no esperaba es que mi situación cambiaria en febrero del 2021 con la llegada de mi primer gatito, Kenji.

Aproximadamente la tercera semana de febrero del 2021 decidí salir de mi casa a algo que ya no me acuerdo, cuando subí las escaleras que me llevan a la calle, mis padres estaban en la puerta y justo a sus pies estaba un lindo gatito frotándose contra sus piernas. Mi mama no es muy de tener mascotas y los gatos no son sus animales favoritos, así que ella intentaba que el gato se fuera, pero no, él se quedaba allí y cuando termine de subir las escaleras, él en lo que me vio con su tierna carita se acercó y comenzó a frotarse para dejarme su olorcito e insistía en que le hiciera cariño. Desde que vimos al gatito tomos notamos que aún estaba en su etapa de cachorro y que era un gato que vivía en casa porque tenía un pelaje brilloso, se veía bastante bien cuidado y estaba gordito; otra cosa que pudimos notar es que estaba pasando trabajo en la calle porque los otros gatos y perros más grandes, que hacen vida por mi calle, lo acorralaban y terminaban arañándolo y golpeándolo. De tanto insistir, mi mamá me dejo ponerle algo de comida y así fue como Kenji duro toda una semana yendo a mi casa a buscar comida.

Yo jamás me había comprometido tanto con un animal, tampoco es que antes me dejaran tener tantas mascotas, pero Kenji me hacía sentir la necesidad de cuidarlo y protegerlo; durante esos días siempre iba a casa a comer y luego se sentaba conmigo en las escaleras, como si entendiera mi desanimo. Durante una semana o más, estuve tratando de buscarle un adoptante, pero nadie quería un gato tan grande, además por su comportamiento creíamos que era hembra, así que menos lo querían. Después de dos semanas en las que le insistí muchísimo a mis papás y con la ayuda de una prima, logramos que ellos aceptaran al gato, pero había condiciones, no solo debía hacerme responsable de su comida, su agua y sus necesidades porque si, los gatos necesitan de mucha atención y cuidado (incluso me atrevo a decir que necesitan más de esto que un perro), al principio Kenji solo podía entrar a la casa para comer, así que debía asegurarme de que no entrará en ningún otro momento y de que cuando viniera a comer no rompiera absolutamente nada.

Seguro se preguntaran en donde dormía, pues antes de entrar a mi casa hay un pasillo, justo allí le pusimos una cajita, la cual él amaba, con muchos pedazos de tela y así, aunque pasaba gran parte del día en casa acostado en una almohada gigante y calientita en la sala o jugando con sus pelotas y cuerditas, dormía afuera calientito en su caja, sin temor a que se mojara si llovía o que otros animales lo atacaran y con la posibilidad de poder ir a hacer sus necesidades en donde mejor le pareciera. Poco a poco Kenji se fue ganando el cariño de mis papás y mi hermano, que tampoco quería una mascota, y después de tanto pelear cada noche para no salir de casa y maullar, como sirena de ambulancia, todas las mañanas para entrar a comer, acostarse y jugar, un día mis papás lo dejaron dormir dentro de casa, pequeño error porque hizo un gran desastre, ya que tenía que hacer sus necesidades y no tenía tierra o arena para hacerlo, y la mañana siguiente tuvimos mucho que limpiar y por supuesto tuvimos que solucionar de emergencia lo de su arenero. Poco después, gracias a una amiga de mi mamá descubrimos que Kenji era macho y eso también fue de gran ayuda para que mis papás lo aceptarán.

Aunque al comienzo fue una constante lucha, ya que no lo podíamos dejar pasar a los cuartos porque se subía a las camas, aruño gran parte del mueble, quería comerse todo lo que encontraba, no le gustaba esperar por la comida y muchas otras cosas, también fue muy divertido enseñarlo a cambiar ese tipo de conductas. A mí me hacía sentir mucho mejor sentarme a hacerle cariño o salir a la sala a jugar con él y su pelota amarilla o con una cuerdita que amaba perseguir. Kenji no solo me convirtió en una Karen responsable que ahora ama pasar tiempo con sus gatos (tengo dos, pero les contaré de mi otro gato en otro post) y que aprendió a entender y valorar a los gatos como mascota, porque al contrario de lo que solemos creer los gatos no son independientes y odiosos, son animales muy cariñosos y que necesitan de constante atención, cuidado y cariño de nuestra parte. También me ayudo a sobrepasar la época de pandemia que, si bien para algunos fue genial, para otros no los fue tanto.

Kenji es un gato muy territorial, por eso termino espantando a casi todos los gatos (machos) que merodeaban por mi casa y en ocasiones también peleaba con las gatas que se metían a su territorio, tanto así que ya todos los vecinos saben quién es y una de mis vecinas dice que él es Don gato y que mi gato más pequeño, Tigre, es su pandilla. Sin embargo, a pesar de ser muy arisco, también es un gato que sabe ganarse el cariño de las personas porque tiene un lindo pelaje y tiene su lado tierno, así que poco a poco no solo se ha abierto las puertas del corazón de mis vecinos, también las puertas de sus casas porque todos le dan comida.

Para terminar, les recuerdo, adopten NO compren, vamos a darle un hogar a aquellos pequeños que tanto lo necesitan y dejar de apoyar los criaderos de animales en donde estos permanecen en cautiverio y en condiciones de deplorables. Apoyemos compartiendo o donando a las campañas de esterilización, para reducir la reproducción de animales en situación de calle, y ayudando a los refugios que les dan un techo a estos pequeños.
