A little over two weeks ago, we made a decision that greatly changed the life of my male kitten, Rocket. After only seven months with us and at approximately eight months of age, we were finally able to arrange for him to be neutered. Although we also wanted to spay our older female cat, who is his sister and the same age, she had given birth less than a month earlier, so we couldn't do it.
So for now, I'll just tell you about our experience with neutering our kitten. First, I should tell you that Rocket was going through a difficult phase. He was urinating everywhere, and when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere. He always wanted to escape to the street and got very stressed when a cat passed by the house, which was difficult to avoid because there are many cats where I live.
We did some research to find out why he was behaving this way and realized that he was under a lot of stress because, like all cats, he is very territorial and wanted to protect what was his, which also made him want to urinate everywhere throughout the day. On the other hand, we tried to be as responsible as possible on our part, so neutering him was a way to prevent so many kittens from ending up on the street because there was a female cat in heat on the street that made Rocket run away from home.

Hace un poco más de 2 semanas tomamos una decisión que cambió mucho la vida de mi gatito macho mayo, Rocket. Con tan solo 7 meses con nosotros y aproximadamente 8 meses de edad, finalmente pudimos organizarnos para castrarlo. Aunque queríamos también esterilizar a nuestra gatita más grande, que es su hermana y tiene la misma edad, aun no tiene ni siquiera un mes de haber dado a luz y no pudimos.Así que por ahora solo les contaré de como fue nuestra experiencia con la castración en nuestro gatito. Primero debo contarles, que Rocket estaba en una etapa difícil, se orinaba por todas partes y cuando digo todas, me refiero a todas. Quería escaparse siempre a la calle y se estresada un montón cuando pasaba un gato cerca de la casa, y esto es difícil que no pasara porque hay muchos gatos por donde vivo.
Nos informamos bien de porque se estaba comportando así y comprendimos que estaba bajo mucho estrés debido a que, como todo gato es muy territorial quería proteger lo que era suyo, y esto hacia que también quisiera orinar por todas partes durante todo el día. Por otra parte, tratamos de ser lo más responsables posible con nuestra parte, por lo que castrarlo era una forma de evitar que hubiera tantos gatitos en la calle, por haber alguna gata en celo en la calle por la que Rocket se escapara de casa.
Considering all this, we decided to contact a veterinarian and make all the necessary preparations. Fortunately, I can say that the procedure is extremely quick; it took about 20 minutes and was done. I think the most difficult part is dealing with the anesthesia, which stays in their system for quite a while and can have side effects that, to be honest, can be a little worrying. I say this from my own experience because I was very worried when Rocket got diarrhea, had excessive drooling, and looked very weak.
He was drowsy from the anesthesia for most of the day, so we prevented him from lying on his stomach, tried to get him to drink water, and kept an eye on when and how much he ate. I'm not going to lie, and I must admit that I spent the whole day super scared and bothering the vet a lot, asking why they were doing this or that, or if it was normal for him to be a certain way, and everything else. However, they were kind and patient, which I appreciate.
But anyway, all this happened very quickly, and in just two days he was as good as new, especially because since he was neutered, we were told to buy only two medications for his care: a healing powder and a medication for pain and inflammation. We got these quickly and easily at one of the agricultural supply stores near our house. What wasn't easy was getting him to take the syrup, because he's very big and immobilizing him is a problem. We were also afraid that he would struggle and hurt himself, but in the end, we managed it.

Considerando todo esto tomamos la decisión de comunicarnos con una veterinaria y hacer todos los preparativos, felizmente puedo decir que el procedimiento es sumamente rápido, tomó alrededor de 20 minutos y ya estaba listo, creo que la parte más difícil es lidiar con la anestesia, se queda en su sistema un buen rato y puede tener efectos secundarios que la verdad, pueden preocupar un poco. Pero igual todo esto pasó súper rápido en tan solo dos días ya estaba como nuevo, sobretodo porque desde que lo castraron se nos indicó comprar dos únicos medicamentos para su cuidado, un cicatrizante en polvo y un medicamento para el dolor y la inflamación. Esto lo conseguimos rápido y fácil en una de las agropecuarias cercanas a nuestra casa, lo que no fue fácil, fue que se tomara el jarabe, porque es muy grande e inmovilizarlo es un problema. Además de que nos daba miedo de que hiciera mucha fuerza y se lastimara, pero al final, se logró.
We quickly noticed changes in Rocket's behavior. He magically stopped urinating everywhere, and although many of the hormones are still in his body because not much time has passed, he seems much calmer and more playful instead of stressed and scared.
For me, that's a super positive change, and I'm glad I made the decision to neuter him. At first, I felt a little sad because, in a way, when you think about the possibility of having children from some of them, it's a beautiful thing. but beyond any feelings I might have, there are decisions that must be made and that are the right ones. I love that my kitten is much calmer and doesn't have to experience discomfort from heat or other things, and that's enough for me.
Now we are just waiting for the right time to spay our female cat so that she can also be calm. As for her three beautiful and beloved kittens, since it was not possible for us to have five kittens at home, we have found two very responsible and loving owners who can take care of them when the time is right. For now, they are here at home, growing a little bit more every day.
