Maesi loves to hunt
I guess most cats do but she's more focused on catching flies/mosquitos or other bugs she spots than Luna. Cat owners know the funny sounds cat make when they are bird watching, it's a sound I copied once in the past and ever since I did it to grab Maesi's attention to catch some creepy crawler, she now responds to that sound immediately if I make it.
She doesn't bother when my daughter or boyfriend does it but even if she's sleeping under the blanket in the room on the other side of the house, and I make this sound from the kitchen, she's there within seconds. While when I call her several times for wet food, she's never in a hurry and often comes walking in at a slow pace when Luna already finished half of the food herself.
Luna is a foodie you see, Maesi isn't impressed by most treats or food we offer, she can't be bothered to do something for a treat, while Luna is very willing to let me brush her or cut her nails and lay still while I do so.
The spider incident
I remember the spider incident in the other apartment. There was a spider crawling over our wall and Maesi spotted it constantly so she was making that sound and trying to capture it. Of course, the spider outsmarted her by crawling up too high.
Although we were quite impressed by Maesi's jumping skills whenever the spider would crawl above the couch, then she'd try to catch it anyway, she never managed to do so.
One day I was in the mood to help her and lifted her up so she could follow it with her front paws. It was our little hunting moment, our daughter was filming it with the tablet and then it happened. That spider turned out to be a jumping spider and decided it was enough and then jumped right towards me (maybe he missed, I don't know but I screamed from shock, lol).
My daughter and boyfriend couldn't stop laughing for the next half hour at least, especially when they told me she filmed it and my scream was in the video, lol. While scared of that tiny thing jumping on me, even though these tiny spiders don't scare me normally, I dropped Maesi (yeah, bad cat mom!) and our hunting time was over. Thankfully, she didn't have anything, but I never dared to hunt this way with her again, afraid of hurting her by accident.
Spiders are useful
In our previous apartment we had 2 spiders but one of them seemed to be the lady because that one grew over time while the other one present (probably not even the same ones lol) was very tiny compared to that one. I guess they all fell for the trap of the widow and got eaten by her.
Our daughter didn't like the spiders but we enjoyed them because it helped with the big mosquito problem in that apartment and being as allergic as I was at the time (it vanished last year, for some reason) I was happy to live together with a few spiders who ate some mosquitos. I'd never smash or kill them but if they get too big, my boyfriend would have to evict them, haha.
What about your cat(s)?
If you have a cat, does your cat also respond when you copy their hunting sounds? I think it sounds so extremely adorable and we're always in Awe when we hear the cats make them. Although Luna is the big (read: fatty) of the two cats here, she is often more in the vibe to race through the house having the zoomies than Maesi, who oddly enough is not fat at all.
Maesi doesn't over eat, Luna does but then again, Luna is more awake than Maesi, who sleeps a lot more as she's a lazy snoozerd. But when needed, if I have to catch a mosquito, she's there and will do anything to hunt it down for me. Unless the doorbell rings though, then she'll hide within a microsecond, lol.
Wouldn't want to miss her for the world though <3 Neither of them <3
