Coming on Hive at first felt like one big confusing space to me. I didn’t know where to start, what to do or who to talk to. But over time with my small steps and little experiences here and there, I’ve learnt a few things that really helped me find my feet here. So if you’re just joining Hive and you feel a bit lost like I did, let me share some of my own golden advice with you. I'm not yet a pro o, but these things I’m about to share really helped me as a newbie and I hope it helps you too.
First one I would say is this, follow people who are active. Don’t just follow random names or popular old users who hardly post anymore. It’s better to follow people who are currently engaging and posting, especially those that reply to comments and support newbies like us. You learn faster when you’re seeing what others are doing now, not what they did three years ago. Active people bring active energy to your feed.
Second one is very important, don’t waste your resource credits anyhow. This is one mistake I made that I don’t want another newbie to repeat. I was busy commenting everywhere and voting everything I saw, not knowing I was draining my RC. Once that RC finish, you can’t post or comment until it recharge, and that thing can be really slow. Always try to use your RC wisely. Avoid too much posting in one day or unnecessary voting. Just take it slow.
Third golden advice I’d give is, join beginner friendly communities. I started posting in random places before I found communities like India United, Hive Learners and Ladies of Hive. These kind of communities make you feel seen and heard. They create contest and support beginners. You also get to meet other new people like you who are still learning the ropes. Don't try to spread yourself too thin by jumping into so many communities at once. Start small and solidify yourself somewhere first.
The last but not the least, participate in contest and prompts. Don’t just sit and be reading others. Contests help you improve your writing, stay consistent and get noticed. I once joined a prompt from a community, and from there I got new followers and engagement I didn’t even expect. Just try and participate, even if it’s just once in a while. It helps you grow faster on Hive.
One more thing I must add before I go, my brother @lectureme really helped me get through some things I was struggling with when I first joined. Sometimes, just having one person that believe in you and guide you can really make a big difference. I’m super grateful for that.
So that’s it my dear newbies. Hive is a big world, but you don’t need to be scared. Just take it one step at a time and learn from people around. If someone like me can find my way here, then you too can. Let’s keep growing together.
