AquaShop - Stock Log #11 " The Angelfish "

Starting with some of the more commonly found fish we will work our way up to the more sought after species of fish that only an experienced caretaker could handle.
The Angelfish
Pterophyllum
Freshwater/salt
Angelfish come in many various shapes and sizes. Some fresh and some saltwater. The ones we will see in today's log is the Pterophyllum. These are a freshwater species of fish from the Cichlidae family. They originate from South America in the Amazon Basin and Orinoco Basin. They have also recorded been found in other various tropical rivers.
The known species of Angelfish are unusually shaped for cichlids being laterally flat, with round bodies and elongated triangular dorsal and lower fins. This body shape allows them to hide among roots and plants and vertical surfaces.
Angelfish are ambush predators and prey on small fish and macroinvertebrates. All species form monogamous relationships with a partner so it is good to keep them in pairs.

Unlike some breeds of fish, you usually can't tell a male angel from a female just by looking at them unless the female is ready to breed. both male and female fish take care of the fry.

On average, well-cared for angelfish will reach about 6 inches at adulthood, which is about a year and a half old. If they're housed in very large tanks and are not overcrowded, they can reach nearly 10 inches, although this would be quite rare in captivity.
