Hoy quiero hablarles sobre algo que ha estado dando vueltas en mi cabeza desde hace un tiempo, pero que no sabía como plasmarlo en un post. Se trata sobre las comunidades en Hive y las ventajas y desventajas que tienen. Creo que hay algunas cosas que podrían mejorar y que deberían ser actualizadas dentro del código de Hive o dentro de las interfaces.
Los que llevamos en Hive más de tres años recordaremos que en un principio no existían las comunidades. Anteriormente, la única forma de clasificar o categorizar nuestras publicaciones era por etiquetas. Las etiquetas siguen existiendo, es importante saber usarlas, pero con la llegada de las comunidades pasaron a segundo plano.
En este post quiero expresar una preocupación que tengo actualmente con las comunidades en Hive. Quiero aclarar que me refiero a las comunidades que podemos encontrar aquí y no a grupos de Hivers u otro tipo de grupos.

Today, I want to talk to you about something that has been going around in my head for a while now, but I didn't know how to put it in a post. It's about Hive's communities and their advantages and disadvantages. I think some things could be improved and updated within the Hive code or the interfaces.
Those who have been in Hive for more than three years will remember that there were no communities initially. Previously, the only way to classify or categorize our posts was by tags. Tags still exist, and it is important to know how to use them, but with the arrival of communities, they took a back seat.
In this post, I want to express my concern with communities in Hive. I want to clarify that I am referring to the communities that can be found here and not to Hive groups or other groups.
Ventajas de publicar dentro de una comunidad
Empecemos por lo positivo. Publicar en una comunidad tiene grandes ventajas. Es una forma de lograr que nuestro contenido llegue a un nicho o grupo específico de manera más efectiva. Nos acerca a personas con los mismos intereses y en algunos casos incrementa la posibilidad de que nuestros posts sean recompensados. En muchas de las comunidades hay curadores que están atentos de ellas y ya sea que ellos mismos voten con sus cuentas o nominan las publicaciones a proyectos de curación grandes como Curangel, OCD, Appreciator, Aliento (es grande con el apoyo de TheyCallMeDan) y otros.
También existe el feed de las comunidades donde cualquier usuario puede ver todo el contenido de las comunidades a las que está suscrito, es decir, las que le interesan. Participar en dichas comunidades, tanto publicando como comentando, puede ayudarnos a darnos a conocer en Hive y poco a poco ir creciendo y aumentando las posibilidades de recibir apoyo por medio de toda la comunidad. Sin duda las comunidades en Hive fueron un paso adelante, claro pueden mejorar y vamos a ver lo negativo en el siguiente punto.
Advantages of publishing within a community
Let's start with the positive things. Publishing in a community has great advantages. It is a way to get our content to reach a specific niche or group more effectively. It brings us closer to people with the same interests and, in some cases, increases the possibility that our posts will be rewarded. In many communities, curators keep an eye out for them and either vote themselves with their accounts or nominate posts to large curation projects like Curangel, OCD, Appreciator, Aliento (it's big with support from TheyCallMeDan), and others.
There is also the communities feed where any user can see all the content of the communities they are subscribed to, i.e., the ones they are interested in. Participating in these communities, both by posting and commenting, can help us to make ourselves known in Hive and, little by little, grow and increase the possibilities of receiving support from the whole community. Undoubtedly the communities in Hive were a step forward. Of course, they can improve, and we will see the negative in the following.
Desventajas o aspectos negativos de las comunidades en Hive
En este punto voy a ser un poco crítico, pero también trataré de dar al menos algunas soluciones a este problema.
Uno de los aspectos negativos de publicar en comunidades es que dejamos nuestros posts a merced del dueño, administradores y moderadores de la comunidad. ¿A qué me refiero con esto? Ciertamente, no pueden borrar nuestro contenido de Hive, pero sí podrían silenciarlo, con o sin razón. Aclaro que en la mayoría de los casos no se silencian publicaciones sin una razón válida, lógica o coherente como ser plagio o violar gravemente alguna de las normas d ela comunidad. El punto es que pueden hacerlo. Tienen ese poder.
Esto afectaría la visibilidad de una publicación y por ende sus recompensas, al menos en la mayoría de los casos. Los votos automáticos aún llegarían y cualquiera podría seguir votando un post, a pesar de que esté silenciado. Pero sin duda muchos dejarían de ver ese post.
Silenciar un post lo quita del feed de la comunidad. También hace que las imágenes desaparezcan y que se tenga que dar un clic extra para poder acceder al post. ¿Y qué creen? Silenciar un post dentro de una comunidad también lo "quita" de la etiqueta. Es decir, si ese post estaba usando la etiqueta #vidapersonal, y un moderador lo silencia, ya no aparecerá en la lista o página de dicha etiqueta. Eso pienso que debería cambiar.
Hay comunidades que se han vuelto extremadamente exigentes con sus reglas o requerimientos. Algunas educan y guían a los usuarios y los invitan a mejorar por medio de comentarios. Otras simplemente silencian provocando que el esfuerzo que el autor puso en ese post se pierda. Claro, todo es aprendizaje y siempre invitamos a los usuarios y creadores de contenido en Hive a leer las reglas para evitar este tipo de situaciones.
Es posible publicar solo en tu blog, como es el caso en este post. Ahí nadie, puede silenciarte. La única forma es que tuvieras una reputación negativa por haber recibido muchos downvotes. En esos casos tus posts y comentarios serán silenciados en todas partes. La verdad es que si eres un usuario nuevo y publicas directamente, es muy posible que muy pocas personas vean tu post.
En resumen, publicar en una comunidad te abre las puertas para que tengas mayor visibilidad y también te da la oportunidad de que tu contenido sea mejor recompensado. Pero, por otro lado, estás dejando la visibilidad de tu post en manos de alguien más. Y creo que ahí es donde puede estar el punto débil para la resistencia a la censura.
Otra cosa, en Hive la moderación la hace la comunidad. La misma comunidad decide si un post es recompensado o no. A veces de manera justa, a veces no. Esto es porque no todos tenemos el mismo poder o influencia. Esto debe mejorar para poder escalar y estar preparados para recibir a miles de usuarios.
En las comunidades tenemos que tomar en cuenta que normalmente son solamente tres o cuatro personas los que deciden que se muestra y que no. Hay una cuenta que dueña de la comunidad (hive-1XXXX) y puede haber administradores y moderadores. Rara vez son más de cuatro. Entonces el resto de la comunidad no puede interferir, solamente los que son dueños, administradores y moderadores.
Lo siguiente no pasa muy seguido, pero puede pasar, voy a dar un ejemplo ficticio, aclaro que cualquier parecido con la realidad es mera coincidencia. Juanito es moderador de una comunidad, mientras la revisa ve que Fulanito acaba de publicar. A Juanito le cae mal Fulanito, procede a mutearle el post, ¿por qué? Porque puede. Como Juanito es el único dueño de la comundiad nadie más en Hive puede hacer algo para ayudar a Fulanito. Fulanito “perdió” su post y si decide editar o borrar el post, para publicarlo en otro lado, la comunidad podría ver eso como un repost y lo más seguro es que sea sancionado.
Quiero aclarar que ese ejemplo sería un abuso de poder y estaría mal. Como dije, es algo que no pasa muy seguido y que no debería pasar si el post cumple con las reglas de la comunidad. El problema es que puede pasar, existe la posibilidad. También podría ser el caso que a Juanito lo hackeen o alguien, por alguna razón, tenga acceso a sus claves y entonces silencie a diestra y siniestra.
Disadvantages or negative aspects of Hive communities
At this point, I will be a bit critical, but I will also try to give at least some solutions to this problem.
One of the negative aspects of posting in communities is that we leave our posts at the mercy of the community's owner, administrators, and moderators. What do I mean by this? Certainly, they cannot delete our content from Hive, but they could mute it, rightly or wrongly. I clarify that in most cases, posts are not silenced without a valid, logical, or coherent reason, such as plagiarism or serious violation of any community rules. The point is that they can do it. They have the power.
This would affect the visibility of a publication and thus its rewards, at least in most cases. The automatic votes would still come through, and anyone could still vote for a post despite being muted. But no doubt many would stop seeing that post.
Muting a post removes it from the community feed. It also makes the images disappear, and you have to give an extra click to access the post. And what do you think? Muting a post within a community also "untags" it. If that post uses the #lifestyle tag, and a moderator mutes it, it will no longer appear in the list or page of that tag. I think that should change.
Some communities have become extremely picky with their rules or requirements. Some educate and guide users and invite them to improve through comments. Others mute, causing the effort the author put into that post to be lost. Of course, everything is learning, and we always invite users and content creators on Hive to read the rules to avoid this situation.
It is possible to publish only on your blog, as in this post. No one can silence you there. The only way is if you have a negative reputation for receiving many downvotes. In that case, your posts and comments will be muted everywhere. The truth is that if you are a new user and you post directly in your blog, it is very likely that very few people will see your post.
In short, posting in a community opens doors for you to have more visibility and also allows you to have your content better rewarded. But, on the other hand, you are leaving the visibility of your post in the hands of someone else. And I think that's where the weak point for censorship resistance may be.
Another thing, in Hive, moderation is done by the community. Sometimes fairly, sometimes not. This is because we don't all have the same power or influence. The community itself decides if a post is rewarded or not. This must improve to scale and be prepared to receive thousands of users.
In the communities, we have to consider that normally only three or four people decide what is shown and what is not. One account owns the community (hive-1XXXX), and there may be administrators and moderators. Rarely are there more than four. So the rest of the community cannot interfere, only the owners, administrators, and moderators.
The following does not happen very often, but it can happen. I will give a fictitious example. I clarify that any resemblance with reality is a mere coincidence. Jhonny is the moderator of the community. While he is reviewing it, he sees that Steven has just published. Johnny dislikes Steven. He proceeds to mute his post. Why? Because he can. Since Johnny is the sole owner of the community, no one else in Hive can do anything to help Steven. Steven "lost" his post, and if he decides to edit or delete it to publish it elsewhere, the community could see that as a repost, and most likely, he will be sanctioned.
I want to clarify that this example would be an abuse of power and would be wrong. As I said, it does not happen often and should not happen if the post complies with the community's rules. The problem is that it can happen. There is a possibility. It could also be the case that Johnny gets hacked or someone, for some reason, has access to his private keys and then mutes everyone.
Posibles soluciones
Bueno, después de ver algunos escenarios negativos, quisiera proponer algunas soluciones para evolucionar o mejorar las comunidades en Hive.
Lo primero que recomendaría es que los posts sigan disponibles en las páginas de las etiquetas, aun cuando hayan sido silenciados en alguna comunidad. De esto no estaba seguro, pero lo probé en PeakD y lo confirmé. No sé si pase lo mismo en todos las interfaces, pero PeakD es la que usa la mayoría.
Otra solución sería poder tener una página dentro de la comunidad donde podamos ver todas las publicaciones, incluyendo las que hayan sido silenciadas. Eso o activar una opción que te permita ver esas publicaciones que fueron escondidas (silenciadas) por los moderadores de la comunidad. Esto tal vez no sería la solución definitiva porque aún estarían un poco escondidas, pero creo que ayudaría.
Honestamente, no tengo tantas ideas para solucionar esto, pero otra que se me ocurre es que las comunidades no sean moderadas solo por un grupo pequeño. Podrían ser moderadas por más miembros de la comunidad o al menos tener más opciones para publicar y así no siempre tener que dejar la visibilidad de nuestros posts en manos de otros.
Una solución que me comentó @enrique89 podría ser que cuando nos silencien un post recibamos una notiificación y podamos apelar y retirar el post de la comunidad. No para publicarlo en otra, sería para que el post aparezca en nuestro blog sin ser silenciado y sin perder toda la visibilidad.
¿Qué piensan ustedes? ¿Habían pensado esto? ¿Creen que esto hace más o menos descentralizado a Hive? ¿Cuáles soluciones se les vienen a la mente a ustedes?

Possible solutions
Well, after seeing some negative scenarios, I would like to propose solutions to evolve or improve the communities in Hive.
The first thing I recommend is that posts should still be available on the tag pages, even if they have been muted in some communities. I wasn't sure about this, but I tested it in PeakD and confirmed it. I don't know if the same happens in all interfaces, but PeakD is the one most people use.
Another solution would be to have a page within the community where we can see all posts, including those that have been muted. Either that or activate an option that allows you to see those posts hidden (muted) by the community moderators. This might not be the ultimate solution because they would still be somewhat hidden, but I think it would help.
Honestly, I don't have that many ideas to solve this, but another one that comes to my mind is that the communities are not moderated only by a small group. They could be moderated by more community members or at least have more options for posting so we don't always have to leave the visibility of our posts in the hands of others.
A solution that @enrique89 told me could be that when a post is muted, we receive a notification, and we can appeal and remove the post from the community. Not to publish it in another community. It would be so that the post appears on our blog without being muted and without losing all visibility.
