Although it was released in 2006, only recently I read the book "Um Defeito de Cor" (A Color Defect, in direct translation so it has not been officially an English version) by Ana Maria Gonçalves. I found the characters very striking and charismatic, living in a universe that mixes fiction with real facts about the tragic history of slavery in Brazil and its two-way routes connecting to Africa. I don't know why, but in my colonized (or colonialist) mind, a parallel with the Harry Potter saga emerged, I hope more because of a possible continuity (even if through fan fiction) than because of the elitist plot and fantasy.
One thing that also impacted me were the African proverbs that open each chapter of the book. I made a point of writing them down and now sharing with you below:
A butterfly that bumps into thorns tears its own wings.
Today is Tomorrow's older brother and Drizzle is Rain's older sister.
He who tries to shake the trunk of a tree shakes only himself.
Only when a tree falls do we reach all the branches.
Whether one runs through a thorn bush or chases a snake or runs away from it.
The sole of the foot knows all the dirt of the road.
The sword does not spare its own blacksmith.
When you don't know where to go, look back and at least know where you came from.
Even the dry bed of a river still keeps its name.
Exu killed a bird today with the stone he threw yesterday.
These could inspire a whole collection of posters with images for each of them, but for this post I used only one drawing inspired by one of the moments in the book, the amulets of the enslaved Muslims in Salvador city, who organized the so-called Malê Revolt. To this day in Brazil, there are people who wear the amulets, also called mandingas, which originally bore Arabic writings from the Koran. Interestingly, they are similar to Catholic scapulars, another item still popular in Brazilian fashion and way of dress.

Provérbios africanos no livro "Um defeito de cor"
Apesar de lançado em 2006 só recentemente li o livro "Um Defeito de Cor" escrito por Ana Maria Gonçalves. Achei os personagens marcantes e carismáticos, vivendo em um universo que mistura ficção com fatos reais da trágica história da escravidão no Brasil e suas rotas de mão dupla ligando à África. Não sei porque mas na minha cabeça colonizada (ou colonialista) surgiu um paralelo com a saga Harry Potter, espero que mais por uma eventual continuidade (mesmo que por fanfics) do que pelo enredo e fantasia elitistas.
Uma coisa que também me impactou foram os provérbios africanos que abrem cada capítulo do livro. Fiz questão de anotar e agora compartilho abaixo com vcs:
A borboleta que esbarra em espinhos rasga as próprias asas.
O Hoje é o irmão mais velho do Amanhã e a Garoa é a irmã mais velha da Chuva.
Aquele que tenta sacudir o tronco de uma árvore sacode somente a si mesmo.
Só quando uma árvore cai alcançamos todos os galhos.
Se alguém corre através de um espinheiro ou persegue uma cobra ou foge dela.
A sola do pé conhece toda a sujeira da estrada.
A espada não poupa o próprio ferreiro.
Quando não souberes para onde ir, olha para trás e saiba pelo menos de onde vens.
Mesmo o leito seco de um rio ainda guarda o seu nome.
Exu matou um pássaro hoje com a pedra que jogou ontem.
Valem uma coleção de cartazes com imagens para cada um deles mas para este post usei só um desenho inspirado por um dos momentos do livro, os amuletos dos muçulmanos escravizados que organizaram a chamada Revolta dos Malês. Até hoje há quem use os patuás, também chamados mandingas, que originalmente carregavam escritos em árabe do Alcorão. Curiosamente parecido com os escapulários católicos, outro item ainda popular na vestimenta do brasileiro.
