About 4 years ago at a Water Technology exhibition in Tel Aviv I came across this amazing system that creates cooking gas and liquid fertilizer from household waste.
It’s called Home BioGas and is from an Israeli startup company. https://www.homebiogas.com/
I thought it was a great idea and although I didn’t yet have a place to put it, I ordered from their first production run about 3 years ago.
Our new apartment was delayed 18 months and I finally got the two big boxes delivered shortly after moving in.
But then our terrace had to be completely relaid because of a problem. So it sat in boxes for another 12 months.
About 6 months ago I started thinking about installing it, but the warm weather was ending so I needed to delay to late spring as the system needs warm weather during its activation period.
When I contacted Home BioGas about 2 months ago with questions about installation, they offered me a free upgrade to a HomeBiogas 2, which is much improved and easier to install.
Over the last week I’ve been installing it. It’s quite quick but needs 80kg of sand as weights for the gas bladder.
I had to fill up 48 one liter bags with beach sand and haul them in two trips with a shopping cart from the beach to our apartment- a 25 minute walk. Sand is really heavy!!
I’ve now finished installation and now need to go to an Equestrian center to get 100 liters of horse manure to start the biological processes. My five 20 liter buckets (with lids!) are ready for this shitty task!
I plan to do this over the next few days and then have to wait 3 weeks for the system to be ready to take all our household organic waste.
I’ll write another post once it’s working.
