Everyday is like an Easter-egg hunt on the homestead!
We used to house our chickens in a coup in a community owned red barn to keep them safe.
We'd let them out during the day so they could free range and then lock them up at nightfall to keep the plethora of possums and raccoons from predating upon them.
The birds had plenty of nesting boxes in which to lay their eggs inside the coup but most chose to play a daily game of hide-n-seek out in the hay mound or yard.
Our children's job was seek out their nesting spots and collect the cargo. Fortunately, chickens aren't too smart, so they usually laid their eggs in or near the same places.
As a side note, their ability to free range gave them enough protein to make their yokes a dark golden color. Nice and thick and oh so tasty.
