As many of you know my family and I recently moved from Central New York to the Coastal Region of Virginia. I was realistic in the knowledge that we would still get some colder temperatures, even below freezing. I was not however prepared for the 8 to 10 inches of snow we just received Wednesday night and throughout Thursday morning. Along with the snow has been some very bitter cold temperatures too. So cold my chickens refuse to leave their coop. I can hardly blame them! I don't want to leave my house either.
but, alas part of the joys of living the homestead life and having animals who depend on you means you get up, get out and break frozen water and make sure your animals have plenty of warm bedding.
this picture is of me on one such occasion this week trudging through the snow in to care for and spend some time with the animals who trust in my ability to care for them.
The funny part behind this photo for me is the coveralls I am wearing. I thought my husband was crazy when he gifted them to me over the holiday. Now, I am ever grateful for his mindfulness of our surroundings and the fact that he supports my love of homesteading too.
The kids don't seem to concerned with the snow or the bitter cold temperatures. It reminds them of our home in CNY and lets face it they have scored two days of snow day's out of this little winter weather. Hopefully it will be back to school and business as usual come Monday.
Our dogs don't seem to be to concerned with the snow or the cold temps as they have been spending much of their days sacked out in our living room. However, they do enjoy a good run through the snow and think its just great fun to play in. They definitely appreciate the ability to come back in and stay warm though. The picture below melts my heart to see how happy and content they are here in our home too.
On a lighter note I miss this: Green I miss the color GREEN!
I shall content myself to making soaps, baking bread and starting seeds for the coming spring. How will you spend your winter days? Hibernating or Prepping?
Stay warm and happy homesteading!
