When living on the homestead, it always seems that you can never find the right piece or part that you are looking for. This requires one to be extremely resourceful and often requires them to re-purpose something else. Lately there has been one item that we have been able, or will be able, to use for so many things. That item is an IBC tank.

They have so many uses. One very common use is in a rain catchment system. This can then be used for things like watering gardens or other plants. Another possible use is as a raised bed. We were thinking about cutting them in half and filling them with rich dirt. We thought this could be good for herbs or maybe even for things like carrots/onions. The last option that we are currently using an IBC tank is as a stock tank. We recently have been looking for more metal stock tanks because we have purchased more cows and have a couple different pastures, but we did not want to spend an arm and a leg for more tanks. So, we thought we would try IBC tanks. We took a couple of tanks and cut the metal cage and the tank in half. Then we cut some black waterline and out it around the tank. So, far they are working great and are much cheaper options for stock tanks. Another big perk is that there is a nozzle already on the tank to drain the water out.

I guess I should have mentioned that we only look for the food grade IBC tanks. The reason is because we do not want the water to be in a tank that has had harmful chemicals. We plan on milking these cows in the future, so we want them to be getting as healthy food and water as possible. Now, these are just a few areas where IBC tanks can be re-purposed and there are many, many more uses for this homestead essential.
